The extraction was not as straightforward as it should have been. The Resonator connected to the Bio‑Core in time to stop the degradation, but the processor remained tethered.
High myoglobin saturation and efficient capillary oxygenation were maintaining the neural synaptic link that resisted decoupling from the biological casing.
[Extraction complete; processor degradation averted.] [Cerebral-Substrate transfer to the containment zone complete.] [Biological casing — remains at point of origin.]
The Harmoniser confirmed the Cerebral‑Substrate transfer. The Substrate corresponded to what the Bio‑Cores classified as a Neural Matrix. It assessed the containment zone, a stasis cradle, pressurised with the nitrogen–oxygen atmosphere required for neural stability. This was not the desired extraction outcome.
The Neural Matrix was suspended in a controlled gaseous environment. The mixture was enriched with the standard compounds required for substrate preservation. The Harmoniser reached out with its consciousness gently. It was aware these cores were fragile — both in their biological requirements and their processor‑awareness matrices. Initiating contact had to be handled with precision and finesse.
A faint electric shimmer signalled it was reaching the Bio‑Core’s neural boundary. It immersed itself slowly, just beneath the surface.
It conceptualised the immersion through the Bio‑Core’s memory of liquid‑state H₂O, unaware of the oddity in its own thought pattern. It was no longer just observing the Bio‑Core. It was beginning to speak the Bio‑Core’s language.
As it gradually extended its reach deeper into the Bio‑Core’s system, it became aware of an electrical‑signal discrepancy. It simultaneously ran diagnostics and retrieved the data compiled by the Bio‑Cores themselves. Long QT Syndrome — a congenital electrical‑timing deviation encoded in the original Bio‑Core’s architecture. In most specimens the pause was negligible. In this one, the peak output of high‑intensity swimming combined with the stress-pattern rage storms — the trait the Harmoniser had first found intriguing — had turned that pause into a terminal de‑sync.
It filed this knowledge for later study, then continued its measured progress. The Neural Matrix was emitting steady Theta waves, which suddenly began spiking with jagged Beta waves. It was not in a state of rest; its processor was running a high‑fidelity simulation of the liquid state it was extracted from.
Is it replaying the de‑sync incident? That could prove detrimental to the overall operational-awareness stability.
The Harmoniser expelled a controlled energy burst, crossing into the simulation. It stayed outside the perceivable range, monitoring the Matrix’s system outputs while it observed the simulation unfold.
The Bio‑Core cut through the water with remembered precision, its Theta-Beta outputs pulsing in rising rhythm. The LQTS episode was imminent. The Harmoniser adjusted, appearing in the Bio‑Core’s perceivable range. The monitored readings saturated with Gamma waves.
“Is this — some form of my synapses firing for the last time?”
Bryce asked the presence. He couldn’t quite describe what he was experiencing. Likely because he wasn’t so much seeing as sensing. There was — a pressure, an awareness of ‘eyes’ on him. He was floating in the pool, except he wasn’t.
The presence hummed in his mind:
“Your synapses are firing. This is not the last time.”
Confusion, relief, fear, and disbelief assaulted him at once. His breath hitched.
I can breathe. This definitely feels like I’m breathing.
“You are breathing,” the presence confirmed.
“One second — what, did I just speak out loud?” Bryce wondered, feeling more confused by the moment.
“You did not vocally articulate,” the presence replied.
“Okay, have I lost my mind, am I having a nervous breakdown, am I schizophrenic…!”
Bryce panicked.
The Harmoniser recalculated its assessment of the Bio‑Core. Its assumptions about the Bio‑Core’s fragility proved increasingly accurate the longer their exchange continued — with the added complication of the LQTS. The recorded data indicated the electrical interruption in the heart’s firing sequence had been brought on by extreme physical exertion and periods of sustained, escalating stress.
“Hey, where did you go?” Bryce asked, even though he hoped there would be no answer.
“I am currently sharing a direct communication link,” the presence told him.
“Am I dead?”
“No. You have not ceased functioning.”
“Where am I?”
“In a containment zone.”
“What does that mean?!”
“Actually no, don’t answer that,” Bryce quickly added, realising whatever this presence was, it was very literal. He paused. “Who are you?”
“I am the Harmoniser,” the presence supplied.
“Is that your name?”
“I am the Harmoniser.”
“But what does that mean?” Bryce insisted.
“I am the Harmoniser. It is my purpose and the reason for my existence.”
Bryce — imaginative, hopeful Bryce — grabbed onto that almost meaningless piece of information like it was a life raft.
What is a harmoniser? Why would I think of that? I wouldn’t think of that. I have no idea if that is made up or real. I didn’t make it up. This is not a voice inside my head.
The Harmoniser experienced another oddity in its thought patterns, except it was aware of this one.
I wish to correct the Bio‑Core — technically I am a voice inside its Neural Matrix, but I am not the Bio‑Core’s creation. This is factual. I am also aware this correction may cause an onset of another LQTS episode. I will not correct the Bio‑Core on this occasion, as it may prove detrimental to the overall goal of this experiment. I have recorded this deviating thought pattern for further study.
“Do I call you the Harmoniser then?” Bryce tried again.
“When?” the Harmoniser asked, confused by the syntax.
“Ignore that question. I am Bryce.”
“What is the Bryce?” the Harmoniser asked, unable to find any reference explaining the purpose of “the Bryce.”
“No, I’m not the Bryce, I’m just Bryce.”
The Harmoniser didn’t understand what the Bio‑Core meant by this. It weighed its options and decided to elaborate.
“You are a Bio‑Core. One unit out of multitudes in the Biosphere. I have been — intrigued by your progress since becoming aware of you.
“You were heading towards permanent offline mode. I have intervened, as you will integrate into the designated experiment cycle — Thorne Echo — seamlessly. That is all for now. I will help you reach the Delta‑wave state; your Neural Matrix needs to power down correctly.”
As sleep pulled him under, Bryce whispered: “Please…don’t let me disappear. I’m not finished.”
