"You know what you're doing, 13," Vega said from behind me, his voice condescending.
Turns out Vega was our Division Leader. "Of course I do." I pulled the lace on my boot. "Good, because I'm not going to baby you. If you die out there, I couldn't care less." He was standing mere inches from my ear. "Same goes for you." I turned on my heel and faced him. "And don't expect me to share where I get my information from." I sidestepped him and walked for the door. Every hall in this building was sterile white or concrete, with very little exception. I arrived at the main hall; Lyra was already waiting by the elevator. She held a briefcase that had the symbol of ARM on it. "What are you bringing into the undercity?" I asked from across the room, not expecting an answer. "A high-powered railgun. It's experimental and could likely explode." I let out a sigh but didn't question it further. I looked down at my own holstered weapon, a simple sidearm. It was all white; yeah, hiding this wasn't going to happen, not that I ever would be allowed to with me wearing this goofy-ass set of ARM armor. "Both of you are ready, I presume?" Vega assumed from across the room. "No, we are currently waiting on the five-course meal planned for us," I said sarcastically. He rolled his eyes and pressed the elevator button. We all wore relatively matching armor, a white and black set that had the ARM logo on its shoulder. How did they get anyone in the undercity to trust them with this setup? DING The door slid open, and we piled in. "Authentication needed," the robotic voice announced as soon as the doors closed again. "Division Leader Vega Coralis." He pressed his fingerprint to the 20th-floor button. "Why are we going to the highest floor?" Lyra looked over. "Helicopter." The elevator jerked upwards, and we quickly began to ascend floors. Ding. We all stepped out. I looked around at our surroundings. I had expected a desert out here, but no, we were in the middle of a city. The other two had walked up some steps. "Hurry up, 13!" I ascended the stairs quickly; the helicopter was already running. We got in and put on the seatbelts. We began to ascend. "Why do you keep calling me 13?" He pointed to his armband. "It's the number you were brought in with, and until you do something that proves you won't die, I'm not going to remember your name." He was number five. "How long have you been here?" He shrugged. "Two years, maybe more. And here's a free piece of advice: mind your own business. Not everyone in this division likes to talk." "Thanks for the advice." I rested my head against the seat and closed my eyes. Mindscape time. "Hmm, not dying this time." Its body was covered in black-as-night armor. "Well, I don't suppose we have much time, so ask your questions." "Why are you just appearing now?" It shifted its weight to its left. "Because you acknowledge yourself as a demon." "Am I the reason demons attacked my home when I was younger?" "Unlikely; it's more that your father pissed off a stronger demon." Back to reality. "Wake up, dumbass!" Vega was yelling from outside the helicopter. I quickly unbuckled. "Alright, no need to keep yelling." I stepped off of the helicopter and quickly joined Vega and Lyra. "So how many times have you all entered the undercity?" I asked, barely expecting an answer. "We should be asking you that, 13," he said, parting his orange and black hair. "I've been here a lot." We stepped into the elevator to the undercity. It quickly began its descent.
