"That isnt the main reason Beep beep.
My vision was blurry. Had I fallen asleep?
I stretched my arms out and looked around the dark room. Who put a blanket on me?
In the darkness of a nearby corner, a woman stood.
"Who the hell are you, and why are you in my room?"
She took a few steps forward. "Lyra of Division 7, and I observe all new recruits." Her voice was eerily calm.
I stood up, and my legs went numb. My vision wobbled from standing up so fast.
I kept walking to reach the light switch.
Click.
Light flooded the room.
She was short, had brown hair, and a pistol on her hip.
"Why were you watching me sleep?"
She shrugged. "Because I watch all new recruits sleep."
I looked toward my door and quickly glanced back at Lyra.
I nearly ran for the door. Was this division filled with creeps like her?
I pushed the door open and just kept running. Eventually, I reached the large open space where activities were held.
"GOALLLL!"
About nine people were huddled around a small flat-screen TV. In that crowd, I saw Jullian.
I walked over to the only friendly face I knew. "Jullian, thank God! This creepy chick named Lyra was watching me."
He glanced over quickly. "I did warn you, you know."
"You didn't warn me at all."
He shrugged. "Quiet down; the match is about to resume."
"Where's the captain?"
Julian shrugged, his blonde hair flailing around his head. "Probably on the couch."
"Well, help me out here. Which one is he?"
"I'm not your babysitter; figure it out yourself."
I could feel myself getting on his nerves.
Who looked the most professional on the couch? There was a black-and-orange-haired dude who looked too lazy to be a captain, a blonde dude who seemed decently professional, and the last dude I fought last night—or maybe this morning?
"Yo, new recruit, go get me a soda from the fridge. This is a direct order," said the black-and-orange-haired dude.
I got closer to him and said, "Well, who the hell are you to order me around?"
Jullian looked at me with pity in his eyes and shook his head.
"I'm the captain now; hurry up and get me that soda. Also, get me some chips while you're at it."
"I don't even know where any of that stuff is."
Julian's eyebrows furrowed as if he knew what the captain was about to say.
"Julian, show him around."
"YES SIR, MR. CAPTAIN MAN," he said through gritted teeth.
"Follow me," the captain said, his voice trailing off.
We walked back to the sandpit area and took a right.
"This is the kitchen."
There were about 50 bags of chips on the counter.
I opened the fridge.
"Don't get him anything diet or zero sugar."
"Why? I mean, besides the fact that they suck."
He looked hurt. "Well, he'll send you back here to get him a normal drink."
"Thanks for the assistance."
He nodded and left the kitchen. I grabbed a random bag of chips and followed closely behind.
The lights began flashing green.
"Why is the director coming down here today?"
I scratched the back of my head. "Could be me, since he personally interrogated me and was at the sight of my most recent demon kill."
"Damn, how recently have you been brought in?"
"Well, since I don't know what today is, I'm going to say yesterday."
"So you folded pretty quickly to joining them."
I nodded. "I don't look at it that way, though. I see it as them helping me more efficiently kill demons."
Jullian shrugged. "Doesn't matter why you joined; you're with Division 7 now. Also, follow me."
We walked toward the sandpit, where about 13 people were already lined up against it.
"So what exactly is this?"
Julian quietly responded, "The director is giving us a non-threatening mission. It's likely going to be an information-gathering mission."
Ding.
Two guards stepped out of the elevator, followed by the director.
"Well, I'd first like to announce Division 7's newest member."
The guards stopped next to the elevator doors, while the director kept walking.
Each footstep echoed as the silence of the building was unbearable.
The director walked slowly to the middle of the sandpit.
"Ryan Aretis, please take a step forward."
I took a step forward.
"State your connection to the demonic, loud enough for all to hear."
"According to this prison, I am half demon."
"Ahem."
He cleared his throat and continued speaking. "That isn't the main reason I'm here. I need three of you to go to the Undercity. I believe Ryan, Lyra, and Vega will be a good choice for this mission. I'm giving the three of you the rest of today to prepare yourselves."
He turned on his heel and walked back to the elevator. "Also, Ryan, don't try to escape; we have a tracker on you."
