Chimera Type Familiar

"Born of brilliance, madness, or both."

Image: https://www.scmp.com/news/china/science/article/3250268/can-chinas-chimera-crack-invisibility-its-hybrid-approach-camouflage

Chimera are among the most unpredictable and unstable class of familiars a mage can bond with. These creatures are very enigmatic and volatile. They are magical hybrids, intentionally or accidentally created by merging the essence, biology, or soul-patterns of two or more distinct creature types — such as beasts, spirits, constructs, or elementals. The result is a familiar that embodies multiple magical lineages, often combining incompatible instincts, powers, or metaphysical laws within a single vessel.

Some are bred through arcane experimentation in rogue labs or research halls of advanced magical institutions. Others are born from chaotic natural events in high-magic zones, where reality bends and species boundaries dissolve. Still others are shaped through forbidden rituals, mythic relic interference, or the will of beings from realms best left unnamed.

Wherever they originate, Chimera familiars are considered both cutting-edge and cautionary—symbols of magical ambition, danger, and potential.

Key Characteristics of Chimera Familiars:

Multi-Trait Hybridization

: They possess the traits, powers, and instincts of multiple familiar types—e.g., the ferocity of a beast, the phasing of a spirit, and the durability of a construct.

Unstable Essence

: Their composite nature can lead to mana turbulence, fluctuating abilities, or unpredictable behavior.

Unique Potential

: Because they span magical categories, Chimeras often develop hybrid abilities or evolve in response to their mage’s growth.

Vesperrex, Sovereign Tyrant

Type

: Chimera [Beast(Canine) + Draconic + Eldritch]

Origin

: Hatched from the fossilized skull of a forgotten god-king — slain in the final siege of the

God Throne War

, buried beneath a battlefield so cursed that even time refuses to pass over it. The egg drank centuries of divine rot, imperial spite, and fragmented ruination. When it cracked open, the last roar of a thousand lost empires echoed into being — and Vesperrex crawled from the wreckage, hungry for legacy.

Appearance

: A small, wiry drake-beast—part emaciated warhound, part skeletal wyrmling.  Its head is a cracked skull with a crown fused into bone. Eyes burn with sovereign memory—ancient laws, broken oaths, throne-fires. Wears a fluttering regalia stitched from the banners of fallen nations. Its footsteps echo like imperial decrees.

Powers

Devourer of Crowns

(Passive + Utility)

“To rule, one must first consume.”

Can consume magic,

artifacts, bloodlines, relics, memories,

titles, spells, or other beings

and absorb aspects of them.

Regal Roar

(Control/Debuff)

“Kneel before the echo of thrones.”

Emits a soul-rending bellow that disrupts all

chain-of-command

, hierarchy-bound, or oath-based magic. Targets must pass a will test or collapse into submissive states — kneeling, yielding, or hesitating.

Sovereign Stride

(Movement/Infiltration)

“No ward may bar a crowned claim.”

Teleports through space as a king walks his halls. Ignore locks, barriers, magical seals, or surveillance as long as the destination is symbolically significant — throne rooms, relic vaults, tombs, courts.

Kingdombound

(Scaling Bond Trait)

“The tyrant grows with the weight of your banner.”

Gains power with every follower, territory, or title his master accumulates. The more influence or symbolic control the master holds — clubs, alliances, planar holdings, legendary deeds — the more Vesperrex evolves in durability, mental acuity, and mythic pressure.

Breath of Final Tribute

(Ultimate Attack)

“The breath that silences history.”

Unleashes a wide cone of

ruinfire

— a ghostly flame made from ash, legacy, and righteous betrayal.Incinerates

structures, enchantments, and bloodline bonds

. Leaves behind nothing — not even a memory. The ground becomes blank and untouchable, like history redacted by fire.

Dread Regalia

(Defensive Aura/Retribution)

“The king is sacred. To strike is to suffer.”

This king is untouchable. While active, any attack made against Vesperrex or his master is echoed back

tenfold

as karmic backlash. Magic fails. Blades crack. The attacker experiences

historical weight

— brief visions of monarchs punishing betrayal.

All the King's Men

(Summon/Dominion Echo)

“Even the dead obey the crown.”

Summons spectral warriors - paladins, archdukes, fallen gunpriests, dragon-knights — all sworn in life to lost crowns. Scale in number and power based on the strength of dominion held. Can be used to hold territory, protect a symbolic site, or rally as a last stand.

Rekthar, Skyrend Gunroc

Type

: Chimera [Beast(Avian) + Elemental + Construct]

Origin

: Forged in the Sky War of Twelve Realms, the

Artificer-Tyrants

sacrificed countless ashes of sky gods, funneled the storm-heart of myriad collapsing stars, and shaped that impossible convergence into a living weapon. It was designed to be the

final platform of aerial supremacy

, but it

transcended its directive

, broke his control seal, and vanished into the storm layers of the Astral Sea.

Appearance

: A prideful majestic hawk-like creature with feathers shimmer like alloyed stormglass — a blend of platinum, cobalt, and cloud-fire. Its wings were tiered: some natural, others mechanical — glowing with runes and hydraulic glyphs. Storm halos drift lazily around its metallic talons. Thunder rolls when it cries. Along its back are modular slots where firearms or spell-components can dock and synchronize.

Powers

Tempest Frame

(Mobility/Flight Mastery)

“The sky is a throne with no walls.”

Grants high-speed, multidirectional flight with perfect stability even in magic-disrupted zones. Not only to self but allies as well bolstering their movement, reflex, energy. Rekthar can shift into a lightning streak for short distances — phasing through attacks and warping behind foes. Capable of breaking through dimensional storms and planar turbulence.

Skyforge Heart

(Synergy/Crafting)

“To me, your broken, half-made items can be Remade”

Acts as a mobile workshop and alchemical forge. Can repair, enhance, or evolve weapons and armor mid-mission. Can imprint runes, bind sigils, or infuse storm-elemental charges into gear or spells. Can upgrade the master’s

creations

into great artifacts over time.

Aegis of Fulmination

(Defense/Barrier)

“Every storm shields its eye.”

Generates a layered, kinetic thunder-shield that absorbs impact, redirects spells, and detonates upon shattering. Each absorbed attack charges a backlash strike that empowers the next offensive burst.

Skyrend Sync

(Bond Power/Tactical Link)

“I fly where you think. I strike where you look.”

Shares reflexes, positioning data, and enemy threat markers with its master. Grants improved dodge timing, perfect shot windows, and predictive dodging protocol when fighting in sync.

Final Protocol

(Ultimate Weapon Mode)

“They thought the storm had passed.”

Temporarily transforms into an

Ascendant Arsenal Form

, becoming more machine than beast: all wings split open into rotating cannon halos, body wreathed in divine thunder. Can fire

realm-sundering blasts

— massive railgun-like projectiles that pierce through armies, walls, and constructs. Can be loaded with the user's

modular ammunition

or spells to fire them as

sky-bursts

or

focused beams

.

Storm Herald’s Cry

(Summoning/Command Aura)

“My call is the horn of awakening.”

Take command of any avian creature and summon forth countless elemental creatures.

Hollow Sky Hymn

(Reality Disruption)

“The sky remembers what should not be — and sings it back into being.”

Rekthar opens his beak and sings a low, glitching war-hymn — part thunder, part machine prayer, part forgotten sky-song. The sound doesn’t echo — it fractures the battlefield.

-

Vesperrex, Sovereign Tyrant. Won!

Joshua hadn’t slept through the night. Again.

The dreams had returned — war-torn skies smeared with fire, towers cracking under invisible weight, thrones made of bone and gold shattering in endless succession. Always, always the same sound: the

roar

. Not like a beast’s. Not rage. It was

remembrance

. A sound ancient enough to echo across dynasties.

The egg pulsed quietly where he kept it — nestled in a warded drawer beneath his bunk in the Copper-badge quarters of the Redhook Linehouse. A chunk of fossilized majesty, black and bronze and veined with dying starlight. Since he’d brought it back from the

Pit of Beasts

, something in his bones had changed. A pull. A low hum.

A hunger.

And this morning? It was

time

. He sat up, heart pounding, before the sun had even climbed above the Linehouse rails. No spell warned him. No alarm. Just... certainty. He opened the drawer.

The egg had cracked. A fissure like a wound split it from crown to base. Black mist bled from the crack, thick and cold, smelling of ruined temples and broken pacts. His magic sparked faintly in response, as if recognizing a sovereign presence or a kin. Joshua leaned in.

Then came the sound  — not a growl. A declaration. Not heard — received. The words were older than language, pressed into the air like a decree issued to all creation. “I have returned.”

The egg split further. Smoke curled across the tiny cabinet floor. The room shrank. The air grew heavy. From the egg's smoking interior, a shape stirred. Then limbs pushed through — long, thin, ridged with bone and molten scale. A skeletal snout pushed out next, crowned with rusted gold, with eyes burning like a dying sun in hollow sockets. What crawled from the shattered egg was not large, but it

commanded space

. The small drake-beast slithered forward with the poise of a king reborn. Fluttering across its back was a patchwork regalia — stitched from what looked like banners of fallen empires.

Its footsteps echoed like

verdicts

. Its every breath sounded like history reasserting itself. It turned to him and tilted its head. “Who dares disturb this king’s slumber?”

Joshua couldn’t move. He wasn’t afraid at all. It was like he found his long lost brother.

What made him hesitant was the atmosphere. It was like trying to speak in the middle of a coronation.

The creature sniffed the air — then leaned close. That burning eye stared straight through him. “You bleed like the old kings,” it whispered. “You ache like the lost. Good.”

A long silence. Then the chimera lowered its head. Joshua blinked, pulse thundering, then did what anyone in his situation might not.

He reached out and touched the cracked crown. “Wow,” he said, breathless. “You are

so cute

.”

The beast’s eye widened, scandalized. “

Cute?

” it asked, aghast.

Before he could say anything further, the world exploded. Flame—green, violet, imperial gold—erupted upward like reversed lightning. Symbols etched themselves in the air around them. Joshua’s magic surged, reshaping, burning away boundaries, evolving. His soul opened and something vast and sovereign stepped in.

Familiar Contract: Vesperrex, Sovereign Tyrant — FORMED.

The fire died. The cabinet was quiet again. The creature stood beside him now, tail curled like a battle standard, wings half-unfurled like a memory of storms. Its gaze drifted to the door, then back to him.

“Then let us go forth, claimant of ruin,” it said softly, “and teach this academy what a throne truly means.”

Joshua exhaled. He was still just a student. A Copper-badge nothing. But now... something older had claimed him. Not just as a partner — as

heir

.

He rose, heavier in presence, the room barely large enough to contain him now. He had entered this morning half-dreaming. He left it with a kingdom coiled at his side.

-

Afternoon

: Club: The Librarians (Gun Lore - Legendary Firearms)

Today Madame Quell took them to the Living Archive. It was a suspended vault of floating bridges and platforms, drifting within a glassless dome that stared into the shifting ink of the astral sky. Below, the faint outline of a

battlefield frozen in time

flickered—shadow duels, smoke-trails, collapsed titans, and burned-out spell residue marked a scene held in stasis.

It was a place that held many captured moments. Joshua stood on a narrow walkway of runed steel, along with the other Librarians of the Wayfinder’s Compass. Above them, an orb the size of a horse pulsed with thought-light.

“Go ahead and explore,” their baby sitter said as they were allowed to go loose in the place. Coming to a thinking machine fused to the Librarians' records, he was drawn to it because the thing rotated slowly, projecting the image of a single firearm into the air.

“Behold: Stormpiercer, the Sky-Splitting Rifle,”

the orb intoned.

A long, elegant rifle materialized midair, its barrel etched with cloud-sigilry and bolts of chained lightning. “Fired once during the

Battle of Nine Hurricanes.

The bullet never landed. They say it’s still flying, tearing through one storm after another. Its wielder? Unknown. The trigger was pulled from a mountaintop — after which the shooter vanished in a flash of blue light.”

“Interesting,” Joshua noted in rapt attention. “Do you have other firearms to show?”

“Yes, there are more legendary firearms,” it said. “Though they are more than weapons. They are

events.

Pieces of history encoded in gunmetal. Once bonded, they shape their wielder’s fate.”

Vowbreaker

– Every bullet it fires severs a bond—be it magical, emotional, or contractual. Used to end a blood pact that enslaved a kingdom. Cursed the wielder to be forgotten by all who once loved them.

The Thorned Caliber

– Grown, not built, this vine-wrapped revolver blooms whenever it kills a lie. Its bullets only hurt deceivers.

Godforged Judgment

– Fired by angels, recoils with divine fury. Requires a binding oath to wield. Break it, and the gun judges

you.

The Paradox Trigger

  – Temporal Handgun. Fires bullets from future timelines. Each shot creates a ripple of cause-effect inversion.

The Scarcoil

– A sentient chain-gun fused to a dead war god’s spine. It only sings during revolutions.

Spelldrinker

– Void-etched Revolver. Absorbs enemy spells upon impact, nullifying magic mid-flight and turning it into ammo.

Echoveil Dagger-Rifle

– A rare gunblade hybrid once wielded by the assassin-priestess of a forgotten moon cult. Said to whisper

"choices have echoes"

before firing.

Widowmaker’s Lantern

– Fires ghostlight rounds that sever soul from body. Known to be cursed. Said to weep in your sleep after the first kill.

The Crownpiercer

– Regal Longrifle. Used in sacred duels to dethrone tyrant kings. Said to never miss a shot taken in defense of justice.

The Founding of a New Order

They came together one last time that week. Joshua stood near the warped observation dais, watching the group filter in — the same usual faces: a few Copper badge kids with tired eyes and scraped knuckles; the Iron ranks who still hadn’t learned to flinch when they were looked down on. But tonight, there were new ones too — drawn by whispers, curiosity, or plain stubborn hope.

No one brought chairs. They sat on spell-cracked stone and bundled coats. A half-broken familiar orb floated above the center of the room, sputtering with enough light to make their shadows flicker like ghosts.

They weren’t here to cram spells or trade notes on which instructors ignored low-ranked students the most. Tonight was different. Tonight, they would make it official. A faction. A banner. A beginning. Not recognized by the Academy. Not yet. Maybe never. But recognized by

each other

. And that was more than most got.

Joshua cleared his throat, a little stiff in front of so many eyes. “We’ve all been pretending like this was just a study group, or a support circle. Like we were just getting by. But I think we’ve all seen what this place really is.”

He held up his Copper badge, the dullest metal in the school’s ranking system. “This? This says we’re weak. That we should know our place. Stay in the back of the line. Keep our heads down.”

He looked around. “I say we carve our

own

place. I say we stop waiting for scraps and start building something of our own. Even if we’re just a whisper now—someday they’ll have to listen.”

Murmurs of agreement passed between them. One girl — with iron nail charms stitched into her jacket — tapped her knuckles to the floor. Another boy flicked a fire spell just high enough to let it burst into a spark above his palm.

“And so,” Joshua continued, voice steadier, “I propose we stop being nameless. I say we name ourselves. Declare it. Stand for something.”

He raised his hand toward the fractured mirror-dome above, where the constellations no longer aligned but still shimmered faintly. “We may not wear crowns. But we are not crownless.”

He turned to the group. “What shall we be?”

The silence hung heavy. Then a girl with ink-stained fingertips whispered, “The Light.”

Another chimed in, “The Basement Court?”

A third raised their voice: “The Kin of the Broken Crown.”

Joshua smiled. “Maybe we’re all of those. Maybe we’re something new. But tonight, we

begin.

-

The Basement Court Motto: “Beneath the halls of power lies a better kingdom.”

Faction Rank: F– (Emergent Movement)

Type: Hidden Student Assembly / Subversive Magical Cooperative

Philosophy: The Basement Court rejects the artificial prestige and inherited privilege of the academy’s elite. Instead, it believes true power grows in forgotten places — beneath notice, beneath expectation. They embrace the dust and dark, the broken and cast-off, and build a court from scraps and spirit. They’re not waiting for permission to rise. They’re laying their own bricks.

Base: The Forgotten Sanctum

Location: Hidden beneath the Academy’s foundations, accessible only through a vanished servants’ stairwell in the Old Archive. Once a failed experimental domain node, the Forgotten Sanctum is a fractured pocket-space filled with inverted staircases, suspended altars, and rooms carved from gravity-bound thoughtstone. The walls whisper old rituals, and the air hums with half-finished spells. The space shifts subtly to mirror the will of its occupants. New doors appear. Old ones close forever.

Focus: Reclaiming neglected or abandoned academy spaces and hidden power networks within them. Rediscovering and restoring forgotten magics, rejected spells, and lost student traditions

Signature Ritual: Lowborn Pact. Members lay a hand upon the Court’s Cracked Keystone — a broken but still-glowing shard of a defunct realm-core — and speak their pact aloud.

Perk (F-Rank): Groundwork. When operating in forgotten, abandoned, or off-limit academy zones, members of the Basement Court gain: +1 success on rituals, stealth, or spellcraft and environmental awareness - Can detect hidden pathways, secret doors, or warded caches.

Faction Paths / Roles: Rubblewright – Ritualists of Ruin Specialists in forgotten rites, collapse-magic, and chaos-fueled rebirth. They develop rebellious rituals that distort academy norms and empower the downtrodden.

A quiet breath passed through the chamber like a spell just shy of being spoken. The firelight flickered. The broken orb above hummed once—louder than before, as if the room itself were listening.

Joshua looked around at their faces. No two alike. Different magics, different worlds. Some with jagged scars on their knuckles. Others with ink-stained robes, grease-darkened fingers, or spirit-touched eyes. No one here was chosen. But they had

shown up

. Again and again.

“The Basement Court,” Joshua said, testing the name on his tongue. “I like that. It’s honest. It’s ours.”

He walked slowly to the old keystone set into the floor — half-buried in dust and wrapped in failed warding runes. It was cracked down the middle, glowing faintly like a buried heartbeat. “Then let’s make it real. A pact. No thrones. No chains. Just us, and what we build together.”

One by one, the students stood. They circled the keystone. No professor presided. No sigil overhead. Just cold stone and warm breath. Joshua went first, placing his hand on the keystone. “I swear not to no badge or banner. I swear to the Court. To the broken path. To the ones beside me.”

The girl with the nail-charms followed. “To the unfavored and the forgotten,” she added.

The fire mage boy was next. “To magic that doesn’t need permission.”

Each one laid a hand down and spoke. Some solemn. Some fierce. Some are soft. And when the last oath was spoken, the cracked keystone

lit

. Not with a blaze — but with something deeper. The walls of the room shifted slightly. A doorway opened in the stone. A memory stirred awake. The

Sanctum had heard them

.

Above them, in the mirrored dome, a broken constellation realigned — not fully, not perfectly, but enough to suggest a pattern in the chaos. A crown made of stars, cracked and unfinished, but unmistakably present. They were no longer just strays in the margins. They were

The Basement Court

.

Joshua stepped back. “We begin with nothing,” he said, voice firm, “but that’s more than they ever wanted us to have.”

Someone in the back laughed. “Then let’s show them what nothing can do.”

A cheer rose — low, ragged, honest. And deep within the Sanctum, the first new room since the fall of the node was born — a gathering hall of black stone and hollow light, waiting to be filled.

“Okay,” he called out, clapping his hands once. “Settle down, everyone.”

The buzz of quiet conversation and shuffling feet slowly tapered off. The mismatched group — Iron and Copper badges, spell-scuffed and badge-worn — turned to him. Some sat on bundled cloaks, others crouched near glowing sigil-marks or leaned against the pulsing walls. It wasn’t much, but it was theirs.

Joshua pulled out a half-burned scrap of paper, lines of names and scribbled checkmarks glowing faintly under the light. “I counted twenty-one of us,” he said, voice steady. “That’s twenty-one people who decided this school wasn’t going to tell us our worth.”

He tapped the parchment. “That’s twelve Coppers and nine Irons. No silvers. No gold. Just us. The bottom of the pyramid.”

A few students chuckled quietly, bitter but proud. “And what do we have to show for it?” Joshua asked, raising his gaze to the Sanctum walls — alive with breathless, humming power.

“We’ve got a base no one else knows exists. The Forgotten Sanctum. She’s weird, and she shifts when she wants, but she hasn’t thrown us out yet.”

“We’ve got our pact. Oaths that matter. We’ve got purpose.” He looked around the room, making eye contact with as many as he could. “We don’t have prestige. We don’t have legacy. But we’ve got hands. We’ve got heads. And we’ve got each other.”

He paused, letting the silence settle like stone. “This is the Basement Court,” he said finally. “We build upward from the dirt. From the dark. From what no one else even bothers to look at.”

Day 7 – Hearthrest

(+1 Recovery & Meditation)

Morning

: Recover at

Place In Between

/Liminal space

(Stress Relief)

Joshua didn’t mean to find it. No one ever really

does

.

He had woken up aching—not in body, but in mind. A week of relentless challenges. Gunsmithing sparks that bit through gloves. Ballistic formulas that refused to balance. Teachers who watched him too closely, or not at all. And now a crown-headed chimera sleeping curled in his cabinet like a coiled prophecy.

He needed to breathe. He needed silence that wasn't

empty

. And so, aimlessly, he walked. Down a corridor he didn’t recognize. Past a statue that had once blinked at him. Through a door that hadn’t existed before he opened it.

The air changed. Gone were the stone floors and lantern lights of the Academy. Now the world unfurled in a hush — a velvet forest, glowing faintly with blue fireflies. Trees stood tall like cathedral pillars. Mist rolled across a carpet of moss that shimmered with falling stars. And above it all, a sky of shifting constellations whispered names he didn’t know but somehow remembered.

Joshua inhaled — and something in him unclenched.

The Place In Between

. He didn’t know how he knew the name, only that it was

right

.

He wandered, slowly. The tension that lived in his shoulders ebbed away with each step. His thoughts softened, their jagged edges dulled. Somewhere, in the distance, music played — or maybe it was just the wind curling through impossible shapes.

A tree bore hanging mirrors like fruit. In one, he saw himself in five years. He was older. Tired. Stronger. Ruthless. Power-hungry. He turned away before he could see too much.

Further on, a stone pool reflected his soul — not in words, but in colors and vibrations. Red where rage hid. Gold where courage burned. Violet where something older waited. He sat at its edge and closed his eyes. The world became breath.

When he rose, an hour—or a moment—had passed. He didn’t feel

better

in the way sleep tries to promise. He felt realigned. Like someone had rearranged his spine of thoughts and wiped the fog off his inner compass.

The forest was already fading. Paths folding in on themselves. The Place never let you linger too long. Before he left, he noticed a stone etched with a single line: "Come back when the noise gets too loud."

Then he stepped through the threshold and back into the Redhook Linehouse hallway. His badge pulsed once, quietly. Even Vesperrex stirred faintly in his cabinet — sensing something had changed. Joshua stood straighter. It was Hearthrest. And he was ready to begin again.

Afternoon

: Meditation –

Learn about Power System, Levels

After his visit to the

Place In Between

, Joshua didn’t return to his room. Not yet.

Instead, he climbed one of the quieter observation decks on the Redhook Linehouse — a glass-domed turret above the dining car, half-swallowed in fog and moon-glint. A few broken chairs lay stacked in a corner. Dust lingered where the cleaning spells had grown lazy. Perfect.

He sat cross-legged beneath the dome, the sky a whirl of silver clouds and sunlit cracks. He closed his eyes. And remembered. There are many paths to power, one of his instructors had said. But all of them echo through the same core structure.

The path of a mage wasn't a line. It was a

mountain trail

, spiraling upward. Every

Circle

was a mountain peak to climb. And his

magic

— the raw force of

Reinforcement

— was his climbing gear: rope, crampons, battered hiking boots bound in arcane steel. His

Cultivation Method

? The

Path of Ruined Thrones

— built on struggle, lost glory, and refusal to kneel was his roadmap.

In his mind, something unfolded — like a diagram painted on the inside of the soul.

Realm A - Young/Student Practitioner(Mageling)

Rank 1. Neophyte(beginner) Year 1~2

Laying the foundation. Learning the basics of magic, theory, and discipline.

Circle 1 Spark – You have lit the spark of power; student experiments with simple cantrips and mana manipulation.

Circle 2 Channel – Can direct magical energy with intent. Casts basic spells and understands different affinities can direct the flow of magic.

Circle 3 Attune – Connecting more deeply to magical energies and rhythms of the arcane world.

Rank 2. Apprentice(intermediate) Year 3~5

Skilled magic users. Actively practicing and refining magical craft.

Circle 4 Caster – Casts spells with ease; has spell repertoire.

Circle 5 Weaver – Interlaces magic with precision; easily combines effects.

Circle 6 Shaper – Shapes and modifies spell freely; adapts magic to situational needs; personal style.

Rank 3. Acolyte(advance) Year 6~10

Competent and independent, with full mastery of craft. Reaching for threshold.

Circle 7 Binder – An anchor to magic into the world. Leave long lasting effects on the world

Circle 8 Invoker – Commands magic with power and immediacy. Call down major effects on demand

Circle 9 Manifestor - Embodies magic itself. Spell and self are one — castings flow as thought, and raw arcane power bend to them

Pseudo Circle 10 Ascendant – A final-stage Mageling. Not yet a true mage, but their control, awareness, and spellwork border on professional. They're preparing to graduate and step into a full magical life.

Realm B - True Practitioner

Joshua wasn’t even at the first Circle yet.

Rank 0, Circle 0.

But that would change soon. He could feel it — the pressure behind his ribs, the thunder in his marrow. His path was clear. He first had to light the spark of power within himself and for him that was finding his first legacy to scavenge.

Everyone shared the same path. Here at the Academy most students were in the first Realm, that was why it was even named after them. Each realm had 3 ranks, the first being

Neophyte

for Realm One. This was where most first year and second year students were at.

Then there was the Second Rank,

Apprentice

, where most middle classmen, 3rd to 5th year students were at. Finally there was Rank 3,

Acolyte

. This was the rank of the upper classmen.

Seeing he has yet to find a legacy yet, Joshua turned to the other training regiments that his cultivation method offered.

He had the Eternal Crownshadow Mediation, the Everlasting Imperial Breath, the Throne-Void Stance which were good for training his spirit, body, mind respectfully. And then there were the others — deeper rites, strange rituals, the kind that carved your name into the bones of power. Those would come later. Basically his cultivation method was filled with all sorts of great techniques.

Joshua exhaled slowly and sank deeper into the silence. Around him, the observation dome of the Redhook Linehouse faded into abstraction — the cracked glass, the warped rail sounds, the faint rattle of spell-steam in the walls. None of it mattered here. Not now.

He sat with legs folded, hands resting lightly on his knees, palms open to the sky. His Copper badge lay beside him like a discarded shell. This was where it began.

The Eternal Crownshadow Meditation

— a spirit training rite of the

Path of Ruined Thrones

.

It wasn’t about drawing mana or reciting incantations. It was older than all that. Cruder. Holier. Joshua straightened his spine, letting the breath settle in his belly. No thoughts. Just stillness. And then…

"Still the body. Let the past crown you."

The words surfaced unbidden, etched into the margins of the manual like an invocation carved into the bones of an emperor. He let them guide him.

He pictured a throne. Not gilded. Not perfect. A ruined thing of scorched iron, jagged stone, and banners torn by time. He imagined himself walking toward it — across battlefields drowned in ash, through the smoke of a thousand betrayals, toward the seat of power no one remembered.

His breath slowed further. His spirit deepened. And that’s when it happened. His shadow moved.

Not by the candle’s flicker or the moonlight’s whim — but by

will

. It stretched long and unnatural across the floor behind him. It twisted upward, coiling behind his back like a cloak. A crown — fractured and thorned — flickered over his head in silhouette.

He heard nothing. But he

felt

it — a whisper against his spine. Ancient voices murmuring not in words, but in weight. In gravity. The feeling of being

seen

by what came before.

Kings without names. Tyrants long devoured. Generals who bled for thrones that never held. And then a pulse — deep in his spirit-thread — stabilized. Like a tuning fork striking true.

His spirit deeping, finding better anchor in the world. When he opened his eyes, the sky above had changed. Clouds parted slightly. Stars watched. His shadow stayed still now, returned to its normal length. But it

felt

different. He felt different. Not stronger, not faster… Deeper. Rooted. Witnessed.

And that was enough.

“Alright its game night,” Joshua called out as he walked into the Lounge Car — an old Redhook car compartment refitted into a cozy den of mismatched couches, levitating snack trays, and self-heating mugs. The windows flicker with illusory landscapes — desert moons, stormy seas, starlit cities — randomized for vibe.

“Lets get started. I can’t wait to crush you losers,” Flickwick

cackled with joy.

“Are you sure its not you who is going to get crushed like the insect you are!” Hella answered.

“Friendly table, huh,” Velka muttered, tossing her hammer onto the coffee table and pulling a deck out. “Let’s see how long that lasts.”

“Ten minutes tops,” murmured Marrow.

As players took their seats: Ume sat cross-legged on a pillow made of air, her deck levitating in front of her, untouched by mortal hands. Catalina arrived with a full healing kit and tea tray, “just in case the game gets

too

passionate again.”

Virelle sat down without a word, her cards already sorted into geometric precision. The others gave her a wide berth. Brandon slapped on a headband and yelled, “

This is my training arc!!

The table shimmered as illusion runes activated. A mini battlefield sprang to life above the table’s center — a magical arena representing

seven planar realms

shifting unpredictably every few rounds. Dragons roared in silence. Ancient mages flickered to life as holograms. Each player dropped their Champion card with flair:

Joshua

summoned

“Dustfang Zero, Gunmetal Soul”

Hella

brought out

“Silverfang Pact-Walker”

Flickwick

used a chaotic mashup called

“Echo-Chef of the Primordial Stove”

Ume

floated her card:

“Chrono-Lantern Oracle”

— and the lights dimmed unnaturally

Velka

grinned:

“Glittercurse Trickster, Third of Her Name”

Ashford

simply slammed down

“Punchmage the Furious”

Brandon

raised both hands:

“Solar Justice Blazeheart!”

With that the game was on! As the night wore down, and the cards dimmed back to sleep, laughter lingered like incense. Someone put on slow music. Brandon dozed off mid-monologue. Catalina healed Marrow’s nosebleed from a miscast illusion. The Lounge Car dimmed, flickering through a quiet snowfall projection.

Just as Joshua thinks it’s winding down… the back door creaks. And

Jack

enters.

Jack

— the elusive, powerful, fearless “leader” of the Redhook Linehouse. He was surprised when he saw he was a short boy who looked younger them him. He was calm, and charming. He hasn’t been seen for weeks. Rumors swirled. Some thought he left. Others said he’d transcended or died.

He walks in, wearing a bathrobe, holding a half-eaten apple, and says: “Hey. Heard there were snacks.” Silence. Then a beat. Then everyone erupts — a mix of surprise, outrage, and disbelief. Jack shrugs, grabs a chair, and sits down at Joshua’s table.

“Where were you?” Velka asked once all the hubhub died down. Everyone craned their necks listening.

“Hey, I was busy,” he innocently raised his hand.

“With what exactly, may I ask?” Marrow asked, all levity gone from his tone.

Jack took a bite of one the snacks, then said simply. “Finding us a target!”

A beat of silence. The air changed. He leaned forward, voice low—but everyone could hear it.

he answered truthfully. “We all know it was going to come down to this. This old girl is breaking down before us everyday. We need to fix her or else we will have no home. And I’m sure you all don’t want to camp it outside where you might fall prey to anything.”

“So,” Flickwick leaned in. “Are we talking

dorm raids

?”

Jack just smiled.

“What did you find,” Brandon asked with a deep sigh.

“We got a few options!” Jack answered.

“You know that will trigger a Dorm War! We stayed away from that shit, its hard as it is to survive classes,” Hella swore.

“We got no choice,” Ume stated.
