Chapter 6 - SS#2 The Karmic Overlord (3/4)

Had I achieved all I had dreamed about? Yes, yes I believe that I was. Money, power, fame, recognition all of these were what I wished the most from the world. I had imprisoned my teammates to realize it, as well as spending multiple decades to build towards what I believed would make me happiest. Looks like in the end, all of that was for naught. I still grew old, I will still die, whenever that time might be, I still yearned for more, but this ailing body is unable to move much less go another round at being the president. It was unfortunate, but after my fifth term as president, I had to spend the majority of it in a wheelchair. I had developed some nasty tumors in my brain that effectively crippled me. That’s when I decided to get a maid to take care of me. My son was not really one to stick around as he had left to go the politics route in the city of Kannon. He was well received by the people there, but that would be a far cry from being able to win a term as Makeb’s president.

I, in turn, just seemed to get more sour and bitter by the day. So much so that I overreacted when I didn’t like what one of the ambassadors of Elchin, one of our greatest and most powerful allies, wanted out of us. Of course, they kept pressuring me after I explicitly refused them so many times. After that incident, Elchin no longer became one of our allies, and instead opted to finally ask us to pay them for all of the money that they had lent me over the years. This was not a great time as Makeb was in the middle of a major recession, but perhaps that’s why they pressured me into accepting their terrible proposals.

Of course, I could not pay them back when my own people were suffering so I asked the Elchinian government for an extension and they had the gall to refuse it. What was even more outrageous was that they shortened the date at which I had to pay off several tens of billions of dollars, something I had no intention of doing in the first place. They kept hounding me and hounding me for months on end. Until finally, the Elchinians forced everyone who was helping us out before to stop giving us any sort of aid. Now we had no allies, shortage of money flowing through the economy, the tourists slowly but surely started to decrease. Our economy tanked and we entered into one of the worst depressions the world has ever seen in just a few short years.

Of course, this did not help my popularity at all, but there were still a bunch of people that were willing to stick by me. I had very little left. The country that I helped to make prosperous turn on me. It broke my heart to have to do this, but the charade was up. I was no saint, all of those programs that I had to set up were not so that the people could live better lives, it was just that it was my best interest considering that I might have been another Jax being dethroned in a couple of more years. Truth be told, I am a wicked man, all those people I had helped were now all for naught, I am evil and heartless, and those who took my paradise away from me will regret that they didn’t.

That was the point in time that I had resolved to militarize the population of Makeb, I still had about half of my term left. However, that didn’t matter as I knew that there was no way that they would ever want me as their president again. I held a state speech in which I informed everyone of what I was planning on doing that essentially culminated in saying that anyone who didn’t want a part of it was allowed to leave the country. Nearly a third of my citizens left me, mostly from the second largest city of Kannon and others from around the countryside, as well as from the capital.

With this, my plan was set, those who stayed were easy to persuade of why I was about to do what I was about to do. The campaign began with me spending a lot of money on upgrading my existing military to whoever was willing to sell to us. The rest of the money was spent on allowing the people to get trained in the various ways of shooting guns, flying military aircraft, and being sailors of warships. My first act against the Elchinian government was sending one of the most inexperienced pilots that we had and sent him to the giant country of Elchin and have him deliver a parcel to their parliamentary building. The young lad had only been training for a few weeks, barely having flown at all. He made the trip from Makeb to Elchin and as he was heading for the parliamentary building, the most symbolic building of any laws of any country, I told my chief commander of my entire forces to press the button.

I watched as this young man that neared the building with almost no difficulties begin to beg for the heavens to save him. What happened was that I had the aircraft that he was piloting to be installed with a small detonator so that he would crash into the building and send the world a message. The boy knew that he was not able to control the plane any longer and he ejected out and watched as the plane that he was piloting slowly crash into one of the most recognizable institutions of any country fall to pieces. Once he safely landed on the ground, he was arrested by Elchinian special forces who were stationed nearby and tortured to no extreme to get any intel that they could out of him. It was too bad the boy knew nothing, but that didn’t stop them from interrogating him. The same could be said of the other 6 people I had sent to their doom that day.

The Elchinian government was furious about this incident and they demanded answers immediately. I responded with a simple, prepare yourself for war, it’s been a long time coming. They were extremely ticked off by the act of terrorism that I had committed and even less so impressed by what my seemingly call to war. Not to mention, the civilian casualties that had been caused by this dangerous act. In Makeb, there were only two people who knew of this event and everything was still pretty much business as usual for the rest of the civilians. That’s when I began to truly clamp down on my citizens in terms of media. I snuck in many of my own appointed men into the top positions of different forms of power. From economics, to state police, to even food production, and so on. They were all under my control and had been along my side for at least 2 decades by this point, so their loyalty to me was near absolute.

The chief commander of my forces and I kept sending these kinds of “gifts” to the Elchinian government and people. The surprising thing was, they just took it for the first month or so, but after that, they came at us with nearly all of their army, navy, and airpower. Of course, I knew that we were no match for the vastly superior Elchinian forces, but it wasn’t about winning! It was about the message that is sent to the citizens of the world. Makeb would not stand for such insults.

The enemy forces that stormed into my country numbered over 45,000 while my entire population was only 300,000 which was decreasing every day as more and more people left to go to neighboring countries to seek refuge. My forces may not be as numerous as theirs, nor my equipment as advanced as theirs, but I’ve been building up my own army for the better part of a few decades. These people would not be able to kill all of mine so easily.

Out at sea, my marine forces were routed pretty quickly and that’s when they advanced by sea onto land. I decided that after seeing our entire navy so easily taken down to hold onto my military aircraft for fear of losing them as well. That was the reason why so many of their forces were able to airdrop safely into my domain so fast. They did not airdrop into any cities, they only landed near the sea so that their forces would not be split up. Many countries near to Makeb gave permission for the Elchinian forces to pass through their land and pretty soon, Makeb was surrounded by enemy forces on land, air, and sea.

On March 15th, they stormed into Makeb’s capital city and fought through the streets against my own soldiers in an attempt to make their way to me. The Elchinian forces were ordered to fight until they reached my mansion, and kill me on the spot. I did not back down from their advancement, and I made a few public announcements all while they were making their way to me. In one of the speeches, I pleaded for my citizens, or those who knew of my many achievements to the betterment of the Makebian people, to try and convince the enemy soldiers to stand down and go home. Obviously, this was nothing more than a tactic to slow down the advancing army of soldiers, and it seemed like it was doing something to slow down my foes.

Something else that I made an announcement for my people was that those who were the most loyal to me, and those who were with me for the longest amount of time would be given free shelter from all of the violence going down in the streets. My commanding officer was doing all he could to stop the armies, but with only him on my side, the hundreds of clashes that were going on every week would come back as our loss more and more times. I knew that eventually I would be surrounded by the Elchinian forces and that would be the end of that. All of my accomplishments, all of my merits, all of the effort that I put into making Makeb the glowing hub of human equality, all wasted. Even now, my son has already left me to my own fate.
