THE NEW YORK GAMBIT
The transport vessel broke through the heavy Atlantic cloud cover, the bright, geometric skyline of New York City expanding beneath them. It had been a grueling flight, but the moment the tires touched the tarmac of the secure AIEO hangar, the atmosphere in the cabin shifted from recovery to absolute war-footing.
Stepping out onto the concrete, Aditya adjusted his tactical collar and looked back at his squad. "Alright, everyone. Our mission officially starts now. Today is
November 18, 2023
. Grab your gear and let’s move to the safehouse hotel."
An hour later, the team was gathered inside a secure, high-rise hotel room overlooking the bustling city streets.
Hope dropped his duffel bag onto the bed, cracking his knuckles. "We’re finally at the hotel, Boss. So, what’s the actual playbook? Because after that
Vector Splash
back at the academy, my core capacity is at zero percent for any major offensive attacks today."
"I was just about to map out who we are hunting," Aditya said, pulling up a holographic map of Manhattan.
"Wait," Hope interrupted, leaning over the console. "You're only giving us their power tiers. You haven't mentioned a single name or confirmed safehouse address yet."
Aditya let out a cold, sharp breath. "I’m telling you their tiers because even I don’t know their current names and coordinates. The NVA’s internal security is hyper-encrypted."
Hope blinked, caught off guard. "Then how the hell are we supposed to attack them?"
"We sent advanced spy drones to monitor all suspected syndicate cells," Aditya explained, his tactical mind taking over. "Our primary plan was to learn their daily routines and ambush them. But the latest intelligence reports state the NVA has no fixed routine. They operate like ghosts. If we just blindly launch an assault, we risk getting pinned down. I need to buy us time so you and Leo can fully recharge your cores before a full-scale engagement."
Hope frowned, looking out the window at the massive skyscrapers. "Attacking tomorrow feels like a massive gamble. It’s incredibly dangerous for us. What if we trigger an alarm, and a wave of high-rank enemy reinforcement soldiers drops on our heads while we're compromised?"
"You're exactly right," Aditya nodded, a dangerous smile spreading across his face. "Which is why we aren't going to fight them all at once. We are going to hit a minor cell first, and then deliberately leak a false rumor into the underworld. We will spread information that the AIEO has deployed a massive task force of
50 elite vanguard soldiers
to purge the city."
Leo’s eyes widened. "A lie?"
"Exactly," Aditya replied. "Under the immense pressure of facing fifty elite operatives, the local syndicate cells won't know what hit them. Panic will breed chaos. Once they crack under pressure and try to escape the city limits, they will be forced into the open. That's when we hunt them down, one by one, with absolute ease."
Perry crossed her arms, leaning against the wall thoughtfully. "But Commander, what if the situation spins completely out of our control? What if they see through the bluff and realize there are only five of us?"
"According to my local informant, their regional boss acts like a self-proclaimed god leader," Aditya chuckled darkly. "Arrogant tyrants like him don't think logically when threatened. He will panic."
Suddenly, three sharp, rhythmic knocks echoed against the heavy wooden door of the hotel room.
Perry instantly dropped her hand to her weapon hilt, her eyes darting to the entryway. "Who could that be out there?"
"Relax," Jeena said, stepping forward. "I'll go open it."
Jeena walked over, unlatching the security seals and pulling the door open. Standing in the hallway was an old, weathered man wearing a heavy trench coat, his eyes sharp and scanning the room.
Before Jeena could question him, Aditya spoke up from the back. "Come on in, James. I've been waiting for you."
James stepped inside, pulling off his leather gloves. "Aditya. You took your sweet time getting to New York. Why the massive delay?"
"I took heavy damage during the syndicate ambush, James," Aditya said flatly. "I've been stuck in a medical coma for ninety days. That's why I'm late."
Jeena’s eyes flashed with realization as she looked at the old man.
James...
she remembered.
When Aditya first woke up from his coma, he told me it was a man named James who originally provided the high-tier intelligence on the NVA.
James’s eyes traveled past Aditya and landed directly on the twelve-year-old boy sitting on the bed. His breath hitched. "You... you're the same kid. The boy Aditya pulled out of that horrific laboratory mission case."
Hope offered a cocky, fearless grin. "Yup. The name's Hope."
James let out a low whistle, clearly impressed. "Hope... that’s a very cool name, kid. Welcome to New York. Where exactly do you come from?"
Hope smirked, leaning back. "What do you think, old man?"
"Honestly? I have no clue," James laughed.
"Well, you better get used to me, because I am officially a core part of Aditya sir's vanguard team now," Hope declared proudly.
James stopped laughing, his face turning dead serious as he looked at Aditya. "Are you joking with me right now, Commander? You brought a child into a high-stakes, black-ops mission like this?"
"I might not be an upper-level veteran soldier yet," Hope chimed in, his eyes glowing slightly with confidence. "But I'm verified B-tier. Check the data."
James stared at him, stunned. "Oh. Well, then... let’s see what you can do on this mission."
Jeena smiled, walking over to pat Hope's shoulder. "Don't underestimate him, James. He’s practically a celebrity back at headquarters. You should have seen how the entire global board of officers looked at him after his last fight."
Hope's smile widened. "Yeah, I guess I'm getting pretty popular."
James shook his head, turning back to business. "Alright, Aditya. We need to run surveillance on the docks tonight. Which two operatives are coming with me for the scouting and spying run?"
Aditya pointed toward the back. "My two assistants for this run are Miller and Hope."
James looked around. "Alright, who's Miller?"
Miller stepped forward, raising his hand calmly. "That would be me, sir."
Jeena frowned slightly, looking over the data on her tablet before offering a tactical suggestion. "Commander, if I may advice—Perry would actually be a better fit for this specific scouting run. She is incredibly fast, nimble, and highly accurate with stealth maneuvers. Hope is raw, destructive power; he’s slow on stealth but highly dangerous if things go south. Balancing Perry's speed with Hope's threat level is safer."
Aditya considered Jeena’s words for a moment, then nodded. "Good call. Alright, the plan changes. The spying team tonight will be Perry and Hope."
James shrugged, heading toward the door. "Fine by me. Let's move."
Aditya walked over to Perry and Hope, his voice dropping to a serious tone. "Listen to me carefully. This is your first real-world deployment. You need to watch James closely and learn exactly how to spy on high-value targets without triggering a system alert. You are new to the field, which is why I am sending you with a veteran."
Hope squared his shoulders, his expression turning disciplined. "Understood, sir. I'll try my absolute best to learn as many advanced survival and tracking skills as I can."
"That’s what I like to hear," Aditya smiled, giving them a brief nod. "We will rendezvous back at the hotel coordinates after the scouting run is complete. Move out."
"Roger that," Hope replied.
Turning on their heels, Hope, Perry, and James slipped out of the hotel room door, disappearing into the cold, shadows of the New York night.
