Part I
The water was no longer something they noticed.
It was something they had to fight.
Every step through the lower levels sent ripples across the flooded floor. What had started as damp concrete and leaking pipes had become a slow invasion.
Black Sun was filling.
Not quickly.
Not dramatically.
Almost patiently.
The facility was not collapsing all at once.
It was being swallowed piece by piece.
Titus looked down at the water covering his boots.
“We need to move faster.”
Carlos looked ahead.
“Where?”
Titus didn’t answer.
Because that was the problem.
They had been moving deeper for so long that going back no longer felt like an option.
The only direction left was forward.
The corridor ahead was partially blocked by fallen equipment.
Old maintenance machines had collapsed from the ceiling, crushing parts of the walkway beneath them.
Gonzales examined the damage.
“This section wasn’t supposed to flood.”
Carlos looked at him.
“You’re saying that like you know.”
Gonzales ignored the question.
He stepped closer to the collapsed machinery.
“There are systems down here that should still be isolated.”
Titus looked around.
“Meaning?”
“Meaning something changed.”
A low rumble moved through the walls.
Everyone stopped.
The sound was not an explosion.
It was deeper.
The sound of something massive shifting.
Like the facility itself had moved.
Above them, the evacuation had become a disaster.
The remaining OMEGA personnel were trying to maintain order while the facility continued changing around them.
An evacuation group reached the final transport route.
The surface access tunnel.
The door opened.
Everyone moved.
Then the alarms changed.
Not an emergency alarm.
A containment alarm.
The ground beneath them shook.
Water burst through the lower section of the tunnel.
At first, it was only a stream.
Then a wave.
People shouted.
Soldiers grabbed equipment and pulled researchers backward.
The route disappeared beneath rushing water.
A soldier stared at the flooded tunnel.
“That wasn’t on any report.”
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew.
Reports were no longer useful.
Back below, Titus heard the same distant rumble.
The walls vibrated.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Carlos looked upward.
“Are we running out of time?”
Gonzales stared into the darkness ahead.
“We ran out of time a long time ago.”
Titus looked at him.
“That’s not helpful.”
“No.”
Gonzales continued walking.
“But it’s true.”
They reached a security checkpoint.
Unlike the others, this one still had power.
A small screen flickered.
No GUARD announcement.
No warning.
Just a single message.
IDENTIFICATION REQUIRED
Carlos stepped closer.
“Can we bypass it?”
Gonzales looked at the reader.
“No.”
Titus frowned.
“You don’t sound surprised.”
Gonzales remained silent.
The screen changed.
A new message appeared.
COLLAR VERIFICATION REQUIRED
Titus looked at him.
“Collar?”
Before Gonzales could answer, footsteps echoed behind them.
Everyone turned.
Weapons raised.
A figure stepped out of the darkness.
Titus lowered his weapon immediately.
“Frederick.”
Frederick stood there wearing his OMEGA uniform.
Alive.
For a moment, nobody moved.
The last time Titus had seen him, he had been taken away with the rest of OMEGA during the assault.
Now he was standing in the middle of the deepest levels of Black Sun.
Carlos kept his weapon raised.
“How did you find us?”
Frederick ignored him.
His eyes remained on Titus.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
Titus almost laughed.
After everything that had happened, that was the first thing Frederick said.
“Good to see you too.”
For a second…
Nothing.
Then Frederick gave the smallest hint of a smile.
The kind Titus remembered.
The same expression he had seen hundreds of times during missions.
A silent acknowledgement.
I’m glad you’re alive.
Then it disappeared.
“You need to come with me.”
Titus studied him.
“Where?”
“Back to the evacuation route.”
Carlos immediately shook his head.
“No.”
Frederick looked at him.
“You don’t understand the situation.”
“Neither do you.”
The two stared at each other.
Titus stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Frederick looked back at him.
“This place is failing.”
Titus glanced around.
“We noticed.”
“No.”
Frederick’s voice became more serious.
“You don’t understand.”
He looked toward the dark corridor behind them.
“The lower levels are not supposed to be accessible.”
Gonzales quietly spoke.
“But they are.”
Frederick looked at him.
And for the first time, there was recognition.
“You.”
Gonzales didn’t react.
“You know what this place is.”
A long silence.
Then Frederick looked at Titus.
“How much has he told you?”
Titus didn’t answer.
Frederick understood.
“Not enough.”
A loud metallic sound echoed.
The security checkpoint behind them activated.
The screen changed again.
COLLAR IDENTIFICATION FAILED
Everyone looked at it.
Frederick’s expression changed.
“What did you do?”
Nobody answered.
The screen flashed.
UNAUTHORIZED IDENTIFICATION DEVICE REMOVAL DETECTED
Titus looked at Frederick.
“What does that mean?”
Frederick slowly looked down.
At his own collar.
For the first time…
He looked genuinely concerned.
Because whatever that message meant…
He understood it.
And he knew it was important.
“The collar isn’t just identification.”
The lights above them flickered.
Frederick stared at the screen.
“It’s a key.”
The facility went silent.
Then the water level began rising faster.
Part II
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
The word remained hanging in the air.
Key.
Not identification.
Not tracking.
A key.
Titus looked at the device around Frederick’s neck.
“Explain.”
Frederick looked toward the security terminal.
The warning continued flashing.
UNAUTHORIZED IDENTIFICATION DEVICE REMOVAL DETECTED
“The collars were never just for personnel management.”
Carlos stepped closer.
“Then what were they for?”
Frederick hesitated.
That hesitation bothered Titus more than the answer.
Because Frederick was not someone who struggled to speak.
Not in combat.
Not under pressure.
Not ever.
“They were access devices.”
Gonzales watched him carefully.
“Access to what?”
Frederick looked down the corridor.
“Certain areas of Black Sun.”
Titus frowned.
“Restricted areas?”
Frederick shook his head.
“No.”
A pause.
“The areas that don’t exist.”
The water continued rising.
Slowly.
Steadily.
The sound of it moving through the facility became impossible to ignore.
Somewhere beneath them, pumps were failing.
Or something was forcing them to fail.
Carlos looked down.
“It’s covering the floor.”
Nobody needed to be told.
The water had reached their ankles.
The security terminal continued flashing.
Frederick approached it.
“Don’t touch it.”
Titus stopped him.
“Why?”
“Because if GUARD thinks the key is compromised…”
Frederick looked at the sealed doors around them.
“…it won’t just deny access.”
A heavy lock engaged somewhere deeper in the facility.
Everyone heard it.
Frederick looked toward the sound.
“It will isolate the entire section.”
Titus stared at him.
“You knew about these places?”
Frederick looked back.
“Not like this.”
“Then how?”
A pause.
“Military intelligence.”
Carlos gave a bitter laugh.
“Of course.”
Frederick ignored him.
“OMEGA knew Black Sun had hidden sections. We knew there were systems that even the Warden couldn’t fully control.”
Gonzales looked at him.
“And yet you came here.”
Frederick’s expression hardened.
“We came here because something was wrong.”
“Something was wrong before you arrived.”
Frederick didn’t respond.
Because that was true.
A loud crack echoed through the corridor.
Everyone turned.
A pipe above them split.
Water sprayed across the ceiling.
The pressure increased instantly.
Carlos moved away.
“We can’t stay here.”
Frederick looked at the security terminal.
The message changed.
COLLAR STATUS REQUIRED
Then:
PERSONNEL VERIFICATION INCOMPLETE
Frederick stared.
“Something is wrong.”
Titus looked at him.
“What?”
“The system doesn’t recognize me.”
Carlos raised his weapon slightly.
“Why?”
Frederick didn’t answer.
Titus noticed.
His friend had become unusually quiet.
“Frederick.”
The OMEGA soldier looked at him.
“I don’t know.”
That was the first time Titus had heard him say those words.
They moved away from the checkpoint.
The corridor behind them sealed shut.
The facility had made the decision for them.
Again.
Carlos looked back.
“That thing really doesn’t want us going back.”
Gonzales looked forward.
“No.”
Titus noticed.
“You know what it’s doing.”
Gonzales didn’t deny it.
“GUARD is not trying to kill us.”
“Then what?”
Gonzales looked at the flooding corridor.
“It’s trying to control the situation.”
Frederick looked at him.
“And if it can’t?”
Gonzales didn’t answer.
Nobody liked that.
They reached a wider chamber.
Old equipment filled the room.
Most of it destroyed.
But in the center was something untouched.
A terminal.
Frederick approached it carefully.
The screen activated before he touched it.
Everyone froze.
A message appeared.
FREDERICK ALAN
STATUS: ACTIVE
Titus looked at the screen.
Then at Frederick.
The system knew his name.
Frederick looked uncomfortable.
“That’s impossible.”
“You said the system doesn’t recognize you.”
“It doesn’t.”
The screen changed.
IDENTITY CONFIRMED
A second message appeared.
ACCESS DENIED
The contradiction made everyone stop.
Carlos looked confused.
“Either it knows him or it doesn’t.”
Gonzales stared at the screen.
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“It knows the person.”
A pause.
“But it doesn’t recognize the access.”
The room became silent.
Titus looked at Frederick.
“What does that mean?”
Frederick stared at the screen.
“I don’t know.”
Again.
That answer.
It bothered Titus.
Because Frederick always knew what to do.
Always had a plan.
Now he looked just as lost as everyone else.
A new sound echoed.
A radio transmission.
Frederick’s.
He checked it immediately.
“OMEGA command.”
Static.
Then a voice.
“Frederick.”
He answered.
“Commander.”
A pause.
“Status.”
Frederick looked at Titus.
Then at the flooding chamber.
“We have reached the lower sections.”
The voice became quieter.
“Retrieve the asset.”
Titus noticed.
Frederick noticed too.
The word.
Not rescue.
Not survivors.
Asset.
Frederick looked at the radio.
“Clarify.”
No response.
The transmission continued.
“Retrieve the asset.”
Frederick slowly lowered the radio.
The command repeated.
Again.
And again.
Like a recording.
Not a person.
Titus looked at him.
“Frederick.”
His friend didn’t answer.
“Did they know about this?”
Frederick stared into the darkness.
“I thought they did.”
Carlos shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Titus.
“They sent him here knowing something was down here.”
Nobody disagreed.
Another tremor shook the facility.
The lights flickered.
The water rose another few centimetres.
Frederick looked toward the lower levels.
Then back at Titus.
For the first time since they met again…
He looked uncertain.
“Titus.”
“Yeah?”
“If we find what they’re looking for…”
He stopped.
“What?”
Frederick looked at him.
“Don’t let them take it.”
Before Titus could respond, the lights went out.
For several seconds…
There was only darkness.
Then the emergency lights returned.
Red.
Flashing.
And on every screen in the chamber…
A new message appeared.
RULE FIVE VIOLATION DETECTED
Part III
Nobody moved.
The message remained on every screen.
RULE FIVE VIOLATION DETECTED
The words felt heavier than any alarm.
Not because they were unexpected.
Because everyone understood the implication.
Someone had removed a collar.
Someone had damaged one.
Someone had done something GUARD considered impossible to ignore.
Frederick looked at Titus.
Then Carlos.
Then Gonzales.
“Nobody touched their collar?”
Nobody answered immediately.
The silence was enough.
Frederick’s expression changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“You don’t understand what this means.”
Titus stepped closer.
“Then explain.”
Frederick looked at the screens.
“When those collars were issued, we were told they were for identification and security clearance.”
“And?”
“And we were lied to.”
The water moved around their feet.
The chamber seemed to grow colder.
“They weren’t only monitoring us.”
Frederick touched his own collar.
“They were part of the system.”
Gonzales nodded slowly.
“GUARD.”
Frederick looked at him.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“GUARD knows everyone who enters Black Sun.”
Carlos looked around.
“Everyone?”
Frederick nodded.
“Everyone.”
A deep mechanical sound echoed through the facility.
The kind of sound that made everyone stop talking.
A door somewhere far away had opened.
Or closed.
Nobody knew.
The system was moving.
Frederick looked at the terminal.
“The violation triggered something.”
Titus looked around.
“Like what?”
The answer came through the speakers.
Not the emergency voice.
Not the normal GUARD announcements.
A colder automated message.
UNAUTHORIZED PERSONNEL STATUS CHANGE DETECTED
BEGINNING CONTAINMENT RESPONSE
The lights changed.
The red emergency lights disappeared.
Replaced by white.
Bright.
Clinical.
The same type of lighting used in operating rooms.
Titus immediately noticed.
The facility no longer looked like a bunker.
It looked like a place designed for something else.
The doors behind them unlocked.
Everyone turned.
Carlos raised his weapon.
“That’s new.”
Nobody moved.
A moment ago, GUARD had been sealing everything.
Now it was opening a path.
Frederick watched the doorway.
“Don’t trust it.”
Titus looked at him.
“You’re the one who wanted us to leave.”
“I wanted you away from this.”
A pause.
“That’s different.”
They moved through the doorway.
Not because they trusted the route.
Because the chamber behind them had started filling faster.
The water was now above their ankles.
Then their lower legs.
The flooding wasn’t random anymore.
Sections were being sacrificed.
The facility was deciding what areas mattered.
As they moved, Titus noticed something.
Frederick had become quieter.
Not the normal focused silence he had during missions.
Something else.
He looked tired.
Not physically.
Mentally.
Titus knew that expression.
He had seen it years ago during operations where they lost people.
The look of someone carrying information they wished they didn’t have.
“You knew something was here.”
Frederick didn’t answer.
“Frederick.”
Finally, he stopped.
“I knew Black Sun had something hidden.”
He looked at Titus.
“I didn’t know it was this.”
“What did you think it was?”
Frederick looked ahead.
“Something we were supposed to recover.”
The answer bothered Titus.
Because Frederick didn’t say “something we were supposed to destroy.”
A distant alarm sounded.
A different one.
Not GUARD.
Not emergency.
A human-made alarm.
Frederick checked his radio.
Static.
Then a message.
“Omega unit designation confirmed.”
The voice was distorted.
But clear enough.
“Recover the asset.”
Frederick’s expression hardened.
“They’re still trying to communicate.”
Carlos looked at him.
“Who’s they?”
Frederick didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know anymore.
The group reached another checkpoint.
This one had no door.
Only a scanner embedded into the wall.
The screen activated.
COLLAR VERIFICATION REQUIRED
Everyone looked at Frederick.
He stepped forward.
The scanner activated.
A green light passed over him.
For a moment…
Nothing happened.
Then:
IDENTITY CONFIRMED
Everyone waited.
A second message appeared.
ACCESS GRANTED
The door ahead unlocked.
Nobody spoke.
Because the previous checkpoint had denied him.
This one accepted him.
Titus looked at Frederick.
“What changed?”
Frederick stared at the door.
“I don’t know.”
Again.
That answer.
But this time, nobody questioned it.
Because everyone was starting to understand.
Black Sun was not broken.
It was inconsistent.
And that was worse.
The door opened.
Beyond it was an older section of the facility.
Much older.
The walls were different.
The architecture was different.
This was not the Black Sun everyone knew.
This was something underneath it.
Something hidden.
Something protected.
As they entered, Titus noticed Frederick looking back.
At the corridor they had left behind.
At the water.
At the red lights.
At the words still displayed on the screens.
RULE FIVE VIOLATION DETECTED
“You coming?”
Titus asked.
Frederick nodded.
But he didn’t move immediately.
For a second, he looked almost like the old Frederick.
The one Titus knew.
The one who had stood beside him on battlefields.
The one who had pulled him out when missions went wrong.
Then he followed.
Far above them, another evacuation group reached the last remaining exit route.
They could see the surface access doors.
They could see outside.
Freedom.
Then the doors began closing.
A soldier sprinted forward.
“Wait!”
The doors stopped halfway.
For a moment, everyone thought they had succeeded.
Then water began pouring through the opening.
The soldier stared.
The surface was right there.
So close.
But Black Sun had already decided.
The route was gone.
Deep below, Titus, Carlos, Gonzales, and Frederick continued downward.
The water followed.
The facility watched.
And somewhere beneath them…
Something waited.
