Chapter 8 - Sweet Betrayal of the Stars

The mashed potato missile, a glorious, starchy comet, arced through the air with a soft whooshing sound, its pale - yellow color a vivid sight against the kitchen's bright lights.

Celest, caught mid - sneer, his lips curled in a haughty expression, shrieked as the fluffy projectile splattered across his mask.

The sound of the impact was a wet thud, and the cool, creamy texture of the mashed potatoes spread across his mask, obscuring those unnervingly perfect features.

"Seriously?

Mashed potatoes?

" He sputtered, his hands moving furiously to wipe at the creamy shrapnel. The feel of the sticky potatoes on his fingers was unpleasant, and the smacking sound of his hands on the mask filled the air.

Luna, heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped starling, her chest tightening with each rapid thump, felt a surge of pure, unadulterated glee.

The warmth of the excitement spread through her body.

Take that, space - creep!

But the victory was short - lived.

Outside, a low rumble shook the building, like a giant clearing its throat.

The deep, booming sound vibrated through the floor, sending a shiver of fear up Luna's spine.

Her eyes widened in shock as the lights flickered, casting eerie shadows on the walls before plunging the kitchen into momentary darkness.

The sudden loss of light made her feel disoriented, and the air seemed to grow colder.

Then, through the panoramic window overlooking the city, a jagged shard of obsidian sliced through the night sky, trailing a plume of iridescent fire.

The sight of the fiery streak was both beautiful and terrifying, and the whooshing sound of it cutting through the air was deafening.

It wasn’t a meteor.

It was Zara’s ship.

And it was opening fire.

Blasts of crimson energy lashed out, ripping through the reinforced glass as if it were tissue paper.

The sharp, cracking sound of the glass shattering filled the kitchen, and shards of glass flew everywhere, some grazing Luna's skin, leaving a stinging sensation.

Panic clawed at Luna’s throat, making it hard to breathe.

This wasn't some intergalactic food fight anymore; this was a full - blown war.

Her hand instinctively flew to her apron pocket, clutching the star - shaped cookie cutter she’d been fiddling with moments before.

The cool metal of the cutter against her palm gave her a brief sense of security.

Somehow, it felt like a shield.

"Luna, down!

" Olivia screamed, her voice high - pitched with fear. She shoved Luna to the ground just as another blast ripped through the kitchen, sending stainless steel worktops flying. The crashing sound of the worktops hitting the floor was thunderous. Olivia, bless her sugar - spun soul, conjured a shimmering shield of crystallized sugar. The sugar sparkled like a thousand tiny diamonds in the dim light, and the sound of its formation was a soft fizzling. It was a dazzling, ephemeral fortress against the onslaught. It held, momentarily, a testament to her pastry prowess, but the sheer force of the attack sent fissures spiderwebbing across its surface. The cracking sound of the fissures was like a chorus of tiny snaps.

"Olivia, no!

" Luna choked out, the words catching in her throat. The shield shattered, raining down sweet, sparkling shards. The shards tinkled as they hit the floor, and the sweet smell of the sugar filled the air. In that horrifying instant, a blade of pure white light lanced through the air, piercing Olivia’s shoulder. A choked cry escaped her lips, and the sight of the blood seeping through her white chef’s jacket made Luna's stomach churn.

Luna’s vision tunneled; the world reduced to the crimson stain blooming on Olivia’s white chef’s jacket.

Rage, cold and sharp as a supernova, flooded her veins, and she could feel her face heating up with anger.

Ethan, ever the silent guardian, moved with a speed that belied his usual calm demeanor.

His hand blurred, a flash of steel, and his chef’s knife, the one he treated with almost religious reverence, intercepted the light blade inches from Olivia’s heart.

The screech of tortured metal echoed through the ravaged kitchen, a high - pitched, ear - splitting sound.

But something was…off.

As Ethan dislodged his knife, a strange, pulsating light emanated from its hilt.

Embedded within the polished wood, a sliver of crystalline material shimmered, an unnerving echo of the gem that adorned Lord Celest's mask.

In this world, such crystals were known to possess powerful energy - absorbing properties, which explained how the knife could intercept the light blade.

The implications slammed into Luna like a physical blow.

Across the room, Mia, pale but resolute, hunched over a salvaged datapad, her fingers flying across the keys.

"I got it! I cracked Zara's black box!" she shouted, her voice tight with a mixture of triumph and horror.

A holographic image flickered to life above the datapad – a grainy recording from a seedy spaceport cantina, bathed in the sickly green glow of a neon sign advertising "Gleep Glorp on Tap." There, clear as day, was Zara, her stern features softened with a conspiratorial smile, shaking hands with none other than Kael.

Bags of shimmering, otherworldly ingredients exchanged hands.

Cosmic caviar?

Nebula nectarines?

Luna could only guess.

The audio crackled to life, Zara’s voice a low hiss.

"…and remember, Kael, no loose ends. This deal stays between us." The recording cut abruptly.

Silence descended upon the ruined kitchen, heavy and thick as stardust.

The evidence was irrefutable.

Zara, the strict but seemingly caring commander, was a traitor.

She’d been playing them all from the start.

Now that they thought about it, there were some strange things Zara had done before, like always being overly protective of certain shipments and acting secretive about her meetings.

Ethan's voice, low and dangerous, cut through the stunned silence.

"That…explains a few things.

" He looked at the shimmering crystal embedded in his knife; his expression unreadable.

"A few very unsettling things." He fixed his gaze on Luna, a flicker of something akin to worry in his usually impassive eyes.

"Stay close.

The silence hung heavier than a neutron star.

Zara, Zara, the woman who’d lectured Luna about the importance of galactic harmony and proper star - chart folding, was in cahoots with Kael, that smarmy, space - con artist.

Luna felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach.

This wasn't just betrayal; this was a cosmic gut - punch.

Ethan, bless his stoic soul, radiated an aura of controlled fury.

The shimmering crystal fragment embedded in his knife pulsed with a sickly light, reflecting the storm brewing in his eyes.

He looked like a culinary god of vengeance, ready to unleash hell with a whisk and a paring knife.

"Right," he said, his voice dangerously soft, "time to clean house."

Suddenly, the comms unit on Luna’s wrist crackled to life.

Zara’s voice, distorted but laced with a chillingly casual tone, filled the air.

"Well, well, looks like the little earthlings have figured it out. Pity. I rather enjoyed mentoring you, Luna. You have…potential. Too bad you’re about to be stardust."

Luna’s blood ran cold.

Stardust?

Was she planning to blow up the entire planet?

Over food?

This lady had some serious issues.

Luna grabbed the star - shaped cookie cutter still clutched in her hand.

It suddenly felt less like a shield and more like a pathetically inadequate symbol of her naive dreams of intergalactic culinary exchange.

Olivia, clutching her wounded shoulder, hissed, "We need to get out of here!" Mia, her face pale but determined, nodded fiercely, tapping furiously on her datapad.

"I'm trying to jam Zara's signal, but her ship's shields are…robust, to say the least."

Just then, the ceiling groaned, showering them with plaster and dust.

The sound of the ceiling groaning was a deep, ominous creak, and the feel of the dust on their skin was gritty.

Another blast from Zara's ship?

No.

This tremor felt different, deeper.

The floor beneath them vibrated, and a low, guttural growl echoed through the ravaged kitchen.

The growl sent a chill down their spines, and the air seemed to grow thick with a sense of impending doom.

What in the galaxy…?

Suddenly, the floor cracked open, and a monstrous, tentacled…thing erupted from the fissure.

It was the color of a bruised plum, covered in pulsating veins of neon green, and smelled faintly of fermented space kelp.

The putrid smell filled the air, making them gag.

Its multiple eyes, glowing with an unsettling intelligence, fixed on them.

"What the fresh hell is that?" Olivia shrieked, her voice tinged with a hysteria Luna couldn't blame her for.

Ethan, ever unflappable, merely raised an eyebrow.

"I suspect," he said, his voice dry as a Martian desert, "that's the 'no loose ends' part of Zara's plan."

Luna stared at the monstrosity, then at the shimmering crystal in Ethan’s knife, then back at the tentacled horror.

A crazy, desperate idea began to form in her mind.

"Ethan," she said, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and excitement.

"I think I have a plan…"

What do you think?

Cliffhanger ending!

Leaves 'em wanting more, right?

Plus, giant space monster!

Because why not?

I’m thinking next chapter, Luna uses her alien taste - bud powers to… well, you’ll see.
