Chapter 24 - The Heartbeat within

The snow stopped falling.

Musha stood beneath the White Dragon.

No one spoke.

The question remained between them.

"Why does my stone have the Hollow King's heartbeat?"

Aiko stared at her daughter.

For the first time since Musha had seen her again—

she looked afraid.

Not of the mountain.

Not of the Hollow King.

Of Musha.

Kaito noticed.

"Mother?"

Aiko closed her eyes.

"Because the stone isn't a stone."

Musha's hand moved toward her chest.

"Then what is it?"

Aiko whispered:

"A prison."

Musha froze.

Raiden looked away.

Katsurane's face hardened.

Kaito stepped closer.

"You knew."

Aiko nodded.

"I knew."

Musha's voice became quiet.

"What is inside me?"

Aiko looked directly at her.

"A piece of the Hollow King."

Silence.

The wind stopped.

Even the dragon became still.

Musha's fingers trembled.

"No."

Aiko stepped toward her.

"Musha—"

"No."

Musha backed away.

"You said the stone protected me."

"It did."

"You said my power was mine."

"It is."

"You said I wasn't a vessel."

"You aren't."

Musha's eyes filled with tears.

"Then how can something from him be inside me?"

Aiko reached for her.

Musha pulled away.

"Don't touch me."

Aiko stopped.

Kaito looked between them.

"Mother, tell her everything."

Aiko nodded.

"Eight years ago, when you were born, the Hollow King was dying."

Musha frowned.

"Dying?"

"Yes."

"The Hollow King can die?"

"Everything can."

Aiko looked toward the mountain.

"But before it died, it released a fragment of itself."

Raiden spoke.

"The fragment entered the newborn child."

Musha stared at him.

"Me."

"Yes."

Aiko continued.

"Your father tried to destroy it."

Musha's expression changed.

"Kuroda."

"He believed killing you would destroy the fragment."

Kaito's jaw tightened.

"But Mother refused."

Aiko nodded.

"I chose my daughter."

Musha touched her chest.

"So you imprisoned it inside me."

"No."

Aiko's voice broke.

"You imprisoned it yourself."

Musha froze.

"What?"

Aiko stepped closer.

"The moment you were born, the stone responded to you."

Musha remembered the vision.

The glowing stone.

The red moon.

Her mother's blood.

Her father's sword.

"Why?"

"Because you were stronger than it."

Musha shook her head.

"I was a baby."

"Exactly."

Aiko smiled sadly.

"You had no hatred."

"No anger."

"No fear."

"Nothing for the Hollow King to control."

Musha looked down.

"But I have anger now."

"Yes."

"And darkness."

"Yes."

"Then why hasn't it taken me?"

Aiko looked toward the White Dragon.

"Because you keep choosing."

Musha looked at her.

"Choosing what?"

"Who you are."

Kaito walked toward his sister.

"You heard it before."

Musha looked at him.

"The heartbeat."

He nodded.

"It isn't trying to wake the Hollow King."

"Then what is it doing?"

"Waiting."

"For what?"

Kaito looked at the mountain.

"For you."

Musha's stomach tightened.

"What happens when I awaken it completely?"

Aiko answered.

"You become strong enough to destroy the Hollow King."

Raiden immediately shook his head.

"That's not what the prophecy says."

Aiko turned toward him.

"The prophecy was wrong."

Raiden stared.

"You know that isn't true."

"The prophecy was written by men who feared her."

Katsurane looked at Aiko.

"Then what does it say?"

Aiko remained silent.

Musha stepped toward her.

"What does it say?"

Aiko finally answered.

"It says the White Shadow will open the gate."

Musha waited.

"And?"

Aiko looked into her daughter's eyes.

"She will bring the Hollow King into the world."

Musha's blood ran cold.

"No."

Aiko's voice trembled.

"That is why everyone has been afraid of you."

Musha looked at Raiden.

"You knew."

"Yes."

"Katsurane?"

He lowered his head.

"Yes."

"Kaito?"

Kaito looked away.

"I knew part of it."

Musha's expression hardened.

"Everyone knew."

Aiko stepped forward.

"We were trying to protect you."

Musha laughed bitterly.

"By lying?"

"No."

"By hiding everything?"

"We didn't know what else to do."

Musha's eyes burned.

"I spent my entire childhood believing I was broken."

She pointed toward her chest.

"Because of this."

Aiko whispered:

"I know."

"I thought my blindness was a curse."

"It wasn't."

"I thought my silence made me weak."

"It didn't."

"I thought the darkness inside me meant I was becoming a monster."

Aiko's eyes filled with tears.

"It never did."

Musha's voice broke.

"Then why didn't anyone tell me?"

Aiko couldn't answer.

Musha turned away.

"Because you were afraid I'd become what the prophecy said."

"Yes."

Musha closed her eyes.

"And now?"

Aiko whispered:

"Now I'm afraid too."

A roar came from the mountain.

Everyone turned.

The White Dragon suddenly lifted its wings.

Kaito drew his sword.

"Something's coming."

Musha listened.

Hundreds of footsteps.

No.

Thousands.

The snow-covered valley below them began filling with figures.

Warriors.

Black armor.

Red masks.

Crimson Shadows.

Katsurane's expression hardened.

"They found us."

Raiden raised his sword.

"How?"

Kaito looked at the mountain.

"The seal breaking sent a signal."

Musha looked down at the army.

"How many?"

Katsurane listened.

"Too many."

Aiko stepped forward.

"Then we don't fight them."

Musha turned.

"What?"

"We run."

Musha shook her head.

"No."

Aiko stared at her.

"Musha."

"They've hunted me my entire life."

She drew both swords.

"I'm done running."

Kaito smiled.

"That sounds familiar."

Musha looked at him.

"Stay close."

"Always."

The first Crimson Shadow charged.

Musha disappeared.

The warrior barely had time to react.

SHING!

His weapon fell.

Musha landed behind him.

Another attacker came from the left.

Kaito intercepted.

CLANG!

Aiko raised her hand.

A wall of white light erupted from the ground.

The Crimson Shadows were thrown backward.

Raiden looked at her.

"You still have your power."

Aiko nodded.

"Not enough."

Katsurane stepped beside her.

"Then we'll make enough."

He charged.

The battle began.

Musha moved through the snow like a white ghost.

Her feet barely touched the ground.

Her hearing guided her.

A heartbeat.

A breath.

A footstep.

She didn't need sight.

She didn't need to see them.

She knew where they were.

White fire cut through one blade.

Black fire shattered another.

A Crimson Shadow attacked from behind.

Musha ducked.

Kicked.

Spun.

Her black blade stopped an inch from his throat.

"Who sent you?"

The warrior remained silent.

Musha lowered her sword.

"Who?"

He laughed.

"You think we're here for you?"

Musha frowned.

The warrior looked toward Aiko.

"We're here for her."

Musha turned.

Aiko was surrounded.

Seven Crimson Shadows attacked at once.

Raiden and Katsurane fought beside her.

But something was wrong.

The warriors weren't trying to kill Aiko.

They were trying to capture her.

Musha's eyes narrowed.

"Mother!"

She sprinted.

A warrior grabbed Aiko.

Musha crossed the distance in seconds.

Her black sword struck.

The warrior was thrown across the snow.

Aiko stumbled.

Musha caught her.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Why do they want you alive?"

Aiko looked at the approaching army.

"Because they know who I am."

Musha frowned.

"You're Queen Aiko."

Aiko shook her head.

"No."

Musha's heart stopped.

"What?"

Aiko looked toward the Crimson Shadows.

"I am the last Moon Guardian."

One of the masked warriors shouted:

"Take the Guardian!"

Musha stepped forward.

"You want my mother?"

The warrior pointed his blade at her.

"She belongs to the Crimson Shadows."

Musha raised both swords.

"No."

The white flame ignited.

The black flame followed.

"She belongs with me."

The warrior charged.

Musha moved.

Their blades collided.

CLANG!

He was stronger than the others.

Much stronger.

His sword pushed hers backward.

"You're powerful."

Musha listened to his breathing.

Calm.

Controlled.

He was trained.

She stepped sideways.

He followed.

She attacked.

He blocked.

Again.

Again.

Then Musha heard something.

A second heartbeat.

Inside his chest.

Slow.

Heavy.

Familiar.

Thump.

Her own stone answered.

Thump.

Musha froze.

The warrior smiled beneath his mask.

"You hear it."

Musha's blood ran cold.

"What?"

"The King."

The black veins appeared along Musha's hand.

The warrior laughed.

"You're already becoming his."

Musha's anger rose.

The black flame exploded.

The warrior stumbled.

"You're wrong."

She stepped forward.

"I hear him."

Her white flame ignited.

"But he doesn't control me."

The warrior attacked.

Musha crossed both swords.

White and black fire erupted.

The warrior's blade shattered.

Musha stopped inches from his face.

"Who are you?"

He slowly removed his mask.

A young man stared back.

Musha recognized him.

A Crimson Shadow commander.

Someone she had fought before.

But his eyes were different.

They were glowing red.

"The Hollow King has awakened."

Musha's heart sank.

"How?"

The commander smiled.

"Because your father failed."

Musha's expression changed.

"Kuroda?"

"He is dead."

Kaito heard him.

His head snapped around.

"What did you say?"

The commander laughed.

"Your father is dead."

Kaito charged.

The commander raised his sword.

"Wait!"

Musha grabbed Kaito.

"Don't."

"He killed him."

"We don't know that."

The commander laughed.

"You'll know soon enough."

A black mark spread across his face.

Kaito's eyes widened.

"Get back!"

The commander's body exploded.

BOOM!

Darkness swept across the valley.

Musha was thrown backward.

Aiko screamed.

"Musha!"

Musha hit the snow.

Her ears rang.

She tried to stand.

Then she heard it.

A heartbeat.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

Not beneath the mountain.

Not inside the stone.

Inside her.

Musha looked at her hands.

Black veins covered her arms.

The White Dragon roared.

Kaito ran toward her.

"Musha!"

She looked up.

Her eyes were glowing.

One white.

One black.

Kaito stopped.

"Musha…"

She couldn't answer.

A voice filled her mind.

Not the Hollow King.

Not her mother.

Not Kaito.

Her own voice.

"Let me out."

Musha froze.

The voice continued.

"You've been afraid of me for too long."

Musha closed her eyes.

"No."

"You cannot keep me imprisoned."

"I don't need to."

The voice laughed.

"Then open the door."

Musha's hand moved toward her chest.

Aiko screamed.

"Don't!"

Musha stopped.

"Why?"

Aiko looked terrified.

"Because that isn't the Hollow King."

Musha's blood ran cold.

"Then who is it?"

Aiko whispered:

"It's you."

Silence.

Musha looked at her.

"What?"

Aiko stepped closer.

"The darkness you've been fighting…"

She touched Musha's chest.

"…was never his."

Musha stared.

"It was yours."

The mountain shook.

A massive crack opened behind them.

From deep within the earth came a voice.

"LIAR."

Aiko turned.

The Hollow King's red eyes appeared beneath the snow.

"You know what she is."

Aiko raised her hand.

"I know."

"You know what she will become."

"Yes."

"You know why Kuroda feared her."

"Yes."

The creature laughed.

"Then tell her."

Musha stared at her mother.

"Tell me."

Aiko's lips trembled.

"You weren't born to contain the Hollow King."

Musha waited.

"You were born to replace him."

The world went silent.

Kaito whispered:

"No…"

Raiden lowered his sword.

Katsurane looked toward the mountain.

Aiko continued.

"The White Shadow isn't a weapon."

Musha stared at her.

"Then what is it?"

Aiko looked into her daughter's eyes.

"A throne."

The Hollow King laughed.

And beneath the mountain—

something enormous began to rise.

Musha's stone cracked.

Just once.

A thin black line appeared across her chest.

And from inside it—

a second heartbeat answered her own.

Thump.

Musha looked down.

Thump.

Her eyes widened.

Then—

Thump.

The White Dragon screamed.

And every dragon bell in the kingdom began ringing at once.
