Chapter 26 - The Woman who Wore her Face

The darkness disappeared.

Musha opened her eyes.

She was standing in the snow.

The throne was gone.

The army was gone.

The Moon Guardians were gone.

Only Kaito remained.

He was on his knees.

His sword lay beside him.

His eyes were white again.

Musha rushed toward him.

"Kaito!"

He looked up.

"Musha…"

She pulled him into her arms.

"You're back."

Kaito laughed weakly.

"For now."

Musha pulled away.

"What happened?"

"I don't know."

He looked at the mountain.

"The throne showed me something."

"What?"

"You."

Musha froze.

"What did you see?"

"You sitting on it."

Musha looked down.

Her chest was burning.

The black-and-white symbol had returned.

Kaito touched it.

"It wasn't there before."

Musha nodded.

"It disappeared when I touched the throne."

"Then why is it back?"

"I don't know."

Aiko approached.

Her expression was pale.

"Because the throne has marked you."

Musha looked at her.

"Is that bad?"

Aiko didn't answer.

Musha waited.

"Mother?"

Aiko finally spoke.

"Yes."

A bell rang.

Donnnn.

Every Moon Guardian turned toward the mountain.

Hana stepped forward.

"The seal is breaking."

Raiden looked at the mountain.

"How long?"

Hana shook her head.

"Not long."

Katsurane raised his sword.

"Then we move."

Musha turned toward Aiko.

"Where?"

Aiko looked toward the horizon.

"To the old capital."

Musha frowned.

"Why?"

"Because the kingdom's first throne is there."

Kaito stared.

"There are two?"

Aiko nodded.

"The one beneath the mountain is the prison throne."

Musha looked at her.

"And the other?"

"The throne of the kingdom."

Raiden's expression hardened.

"What happens if Musha reaches it?"

Aiko answered:

"She becomes visible."

Musha frowned.

"Visible to whom?"

Aiko looked toward the mountains.

"To every enemy that has ever feared the White Shadow."

Far beneath the mountain—

Kuroda opened his eyes.

Blood covered his armor.

The chamber around him was almost completely destroyed.

The Hollow King was gone.

But someone remained.

A woman stood in the darkness.

She wore Queen Aiko's face.

But the expression was wrong.

Too calm.

Too empty.

Kuroda slowly stood.

"You."

The woman smiled.

"You finally recognized me."

"Where is Aiko?"

The woman tilted her head.

"She is here."

"Let me see her."

"She can't hear you."

Kuroda raised his sword.

"What did you do to her?"

The woman laughed.

"I did nothing."

Her face changed.

For one instant—

she looked like a young Aiko.

Then an old Aiko.

Then Musha.

Then Kaito.

Then something that had no human face at all.

"I only showed her what she feared."

Kuroda's sword trembled.

"You're a parasite."

"No."

"A demon."

"No."

"A spirit."

The creature smiled.

"I am a memory."

Kuroda froze.

"A memory of what?"

"Everything the kingdom wanted to forget."

The woman stepped closer.

"The wars."

"The sacrifices."

"The children."

"The blood."

"The lies."

She touched his chest.

"And you."

Kuroda knocked her hand away.

"You don't know me."

"I know everything about you."

The creature smiled.

"You killed your own son."

Kuroda's expression hardened.

"I tried to save him."

"You abandoned him."

"I had no choice."

"You always have a choice."

Kuroda lowered his sword.

"Where is Aiko?"

The creature smiled.

"Do you really want her back?"

"Yes."

"Then give me Musha."

Kuroda looked at her.

"No."

The creature's smile disappeared.

"Then she dies."

Kuroda raised his sword.

"So do you."

The woman moved.

Kuroda barely blocked.

CLANG!

The impact shattered the stone beneath his feet.

She attacked again.

He ducked.

Her claws cut through his armor.

Blood spilled.

Kuroda struck her across the face.

Her skin split.

Then healed.

"You cannot kill a memory."

Kuroda breathed heavily.

"Then I'll destroy the place that remembers you."

He turned toward the black stone.

The creature's expression changed.

"No."

Kuroda smiled.

"Now you're afraid."

He raised his sword.

The woman screamed.

"STOP!"

Kuroda drove his blade into the black stone.

CRACK!

The chamber exploded.

The creature screamed.

"WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?"

Kuroda pulled his sword free.

"I broke your anchor."

The black stone shattered.

A wave of white light spread across the chamber.

The creature fell backward.

For the first time—

she looked afraid.

Kuroda approached.

"Where is Aiko?"

The creature laughed.

"You still don't understand."

"What?"

"She isn't trapped inside me."

The woman looked at him.

"I am trapped inside her."

Kuroda froze.

"What?"

The creature smiled.

"Aiko is the prison."

The road to the old capital stretched beneath a gray sky.

Musha walked beside Kaito.

The Moon Guardians followed behind.

Raiden and Katsurane guarded the rear.

Aiko walked alone.

Musha listened to her mother's footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Uneven.

Something was wrong.

Musha stopped.

Aiko continued walking.

"Mother."

Aiko stopped.

"Yes?"

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing."

Musha listened.

Her heartbeat.

Then—

another heartbeat.

Inside her.

Not Aiko's.

Something else.

Musha's eyes narrowed.

"You're afraid."

Aiko turned.

"I am."

"Of what?"

Aiko looked toward the mountains.

"Of you."

Musha's chest tightened.

"Why?"

"Because the throne has chosen you."

Musha stepped closer.

"You said the throne could make me evil."

"No."

"Then what are you afraid I'll become?"

Aiko whispered:

"The person who decides what happens to everyone else."

Musha frowned.

"I don't want that."

"I know."

"Then why would the throne choose me?"

Aiko looked at her.

"Because you still believe you can save everyone."

Musha said nothing.

Aiko continued.

"One day, you may discover that you can't."

Musha's voice became quiet.

"What happens then?"

Aiko looked away.

"That's when the throne will truly test you."

The old capital appeared before sunset.

It was enormous.

Ancient walls surrounded thousands of buildings.

But no people walked its streets.

No merchants.

No horses.

No children.

Only silence.

Katsurane stopped.

"Where is everyone?"

Hana looked toward the city.

"They left."

"Why?"

She pointed toward the center.

"Because the throne is waking."

Musha heard something.

A heartbeat.

Donnnn.

Donnnn.

Donnnn.

Not a bell.

The entire city was breathing.

Kaito drew his sword.

"Something is here."

Musha nodded.

"Many things."

Raiden looked at her.

"How many?"

Musha listened.

"Hundreds."

"Crimson Shadows?"

"No."

"Then who?"

Musha turned toward the city gates.

"Dead people."

The gates opened.

Slowly.

One.

By.

One.

Figures appeared.

Ancient samurai.

Their armor was covered in dust.

Their faces were pale.

Their eyes—

completely white.

Hana whispered:

"The Guardian Army."

Katsurane raised his sword.

"They're dead."

Hana nodded.

"They've been dead for five hundred years."

Musha stepped forward.

The dead warriors lowered their weapons.

Then knelt.

Every one of them.

Kaito stared.

"They're bowing to her."

Hana looked at Musha.

"The throne has recognized its heir."

Musha shook her head.

"I'm not their queen."

The dead warriors raised their heads.

One spoke.

"Queen."

Musha's blood ran cold.

Another repeated:

"Queen."

Then all of them.

"QUEEN."

The sound shook the city.

Musha stepped backward.

"I don't want this."

Aiko approached her.

"You don't have to accept it."

Musha looked at her.

"Then why are they kneeling?"

Aiko whispered:

"Because the throne doesn't ask permission."

A door opened inside the palace.

Light spilled into the street.

An old man stepped out.

He wore a white robe.

No armor.

No sword.

Only a black mark across his forehead.

He looked at Musha.

Then bowed.

"Welcome home."

Musha frowned.

"I've never been here."

The old man smiled.

"Your blood has."

"Who are you?"

"The last royal historian."

Musha looked at the palace.

"What happened here?"

He lowered his head.

"The kingdom fell."

"When?"

"Eight years ago."

Musha froze.

"That was the night I was born."

"Yes."

"Why did it fall?"

The old man looked toward Aiko.

"Because Queen Aiko disappeared."

Musha looked at her mother.

Aiko's expression was unreadable.

The historian continued.

"And because someone opened the forbidden gate."

Musha whispered:

"Who?"

The old man pointed toward the palace.

"Your father."

Kuroda's name hung in the air.

Musha shook her head.

"He opened it?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

The historian's eyes filled with fear.

"To bring back the dead."

Musha froze.

"What?"

The old man continued.

"Your father believed he could resurrect the ancient warriors and use them against the Hollow King."

Kaito stepped forward.

"That sounds like him."

"But he failed."

Musha asked:

"What happened?"

The historian looked toward the palace.

"The dead came back."

He paused.

"But they didn't obey him."

Musha understood.

"They obey the throne."

"Yes."

Her hand moved toward her chest.

"And the throne obeys me."

The historian bowed.

"For now."

Suddenly—

a scream echoed from the palace.

Everyone turned.

Aiko's eyes widened.

"No."

Musha heard the scream again.

It wasn't human.

It was a voice she knew.

"Kuroda."

She ran.

Aiko grabbed her.

"Musha!"

Musha pulled away.

"My father is alive."

Aiko stared.

"What?"

"I heard him."

Kaito followed.

"I'll go with you."

Raiden raised his sword.

"Everyone stays together."

They entered the palace.

The doors slammed shut behind them.

Darkness filled the hall.

Musha's footsteps echoed.

Then—

a voice.

"Musha."

She stopped.

"Father?"

Nothing.

Kaito looked around.

"Where is he?"

Musha pointed forward.

"Down there."

They followed the corridor.

At the end stood a massive door.

A symbol was carved into it.

The same symbol on Musha's chest.

She touched it.

The door opened.

Inside—

Kuroda stood alone.

Blood covered his armor.

His sword was broken.

Musha ran toward him.

"Father!"

Kuroda looked up.

For a moment—

his eyes were white.

Then—

they turned black.

Musha stopped.

Kuroda smiled.

"You came."

Kaito raised his sword.

"Something's wrong."

Kuroda laughed.

"Very wrong."

Musha stared at him.

"Where is my mother?"

Kuroda's smile disappeared.

"Which one?"

Musha's heart stopped.

Behind him—

Queen Aiko stepped into the room.

Musha turned.

"Mother?"

Aiko stared at Kuroda.

Kuroda stared at Aiko.

Then both of them spoke at the same time.

"Don't trust me."

Silence.

Musha's blood ran cold.

Two Aikos stood in the room.

One beside Musha.

One beside Kuroda.

Both looked identical.

Both had Queen Aiko's face.

Both spoke with her voice.

Kaito whispered:

"No…"

Raiden raised his sword.

Katsurane stepped backward.

Hana covered her mouth.

The two women looked at Musha.

One smiled.

The other cried.

"Musha."

The crying woman reached toward her.

"Come to me."

The smiling woman whispered:

"Don't."

Musha couldn't move.

She listened.

Two heartbeats.

One sounded human.

The other—

matched the heartbeat inside her stone.

Thump.

Musha's eyes widened.

She pointed her sword.

"You."

The smiling Aiko tilted her head.

"Which one?"

Musha's black flame ignited.

"You're the thing wearing my mother's face."

The woman's smile widened.

"Yes."

Kaito charged.

The creature moved faster.

She struck him across the room.

Musha attacked.

Their blades collided.

CLANG!

The creature laughed.

"You've grown."

Musha's eyes narrowed.

"You know me."

"I raised you."

Musha froze.

The creature whispered:

"I was your mother for eight years."

Aiko screamed:

"Musha, don't listen!"

The creature smiled.

"She thinks she can claim you because she gave birth to you."

Musha's sword trembled.

The creature stepped closer.

"But I was the one who taught you to walk."

Another step.

"I held you when you cried."

Another.

"I sang to you when you couldn't sleep."

Musha's breathing became uneven.

The creature's voice softened.

"I loved you."

Musha closed her eyes.

"Stop."

"I loved you more than she ever could."

"STOP!"

Black fire erupted.

The creature smiled.

"There."

The black veins spread across Musha's face.

"That's the girl I remember."

Musha's breathing became heavy.

Her sword trembled.

Aiko shouted:

"Musha!"

Musha looked at her.

Aiko was crying.

"I am your mother."

Musha couldn't tell which voice to trust.

Then—

she heard something.

A heartbeat.

Not theirs.

Hers.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

Musha closed her eyes.

She listened deeper.

Past the voices.

Past the lies.

Past the memories.

And she heard—

her mother's heartbeat.

Not the heartbeat beside her.

Not the heartbeat behind Kuroda.

A memory.

A real memory.

From the night she was born.

Aiko whispering:

"I love you."

Musha opened her eyes.

She looked at the two women.

Then smiled.

"I know."

The false Aiko's smile disappeared.

Musha pointed her sword at her.

"Because my mother never needed to prove it."

White fire erupted around her blade.

The false Aiko stepped backward.

Musha continued.

"You did."

The creature's face twisted.

Her skin cracked.

Black smoke poured from beneath it.

The Queen Aiko face began melting away.

Kuroda raised his broken sword.

"Musha!"

The creature screamed.

"You should have stayed afraid!"

Her body exploded into darkness.

The palace windows shattered.

The dead warriors outside began screaming.

The Hollow King's voice filled the city.

"THE THRONE HAS AWAKENED."

Musha stood in the center of the storm.

Her two flames burned brighter than ever.

Kaito stood beside her.

Aiko stood behind her.

Raiden and Katsurane raised their swords.

Hana looked toward the sky.

Thousands of dragons appeared above the city.

And on the highest tower—

a black crown appeared.

It floated above Musha.

Slowly—

it descended.

Musha looked up.

"No."

The crown stopped inches above her head.

A voice whispered inside her mind.

"Rule."

Musha raised her sword.

"I won't."

"Rule."

"No."

"Rule."

Musha's white flame and black flame exploded together.

"I said no."

The crown shattered.

A shockwave swept across the entire capital.

Every dead warrior fell to one knee.

Every dragon roared.

And somewhere far beneath the earth—

the Hollow King screamed.

For the first time—

Musha had rejected the throne.

But the throne had not rejected her.

It had chosen her.

And now—

the entire kingdom knew her name.

Musha.

The White Shadow.

The Heir of the Throne.

And the one person the Hollow King could not control.
