The darkness was relentless, an eternal shroud that enveloped everything in obscurity.
I couldn't tell how much time had passed, but an unsettling sensation gnawed at me, a subtle hint that something wasn't quite right.
The world around me felt numb, devoid of sensations. I couldn't perceive any scents, nor could I detect the warmth or cold of my surroundings.
My eyes presented the same picture: a vast, infinite abyss of utter blackness.
A thought anchored itself in my mind: "Is this the afterlife?" It was a question that reverberated through the corridors of my consciousness, echoing in the deep silence of this place.
Instinctively, my hands reached down towards my stomach—or what should have been a stomach. My fingertips brushed against something unfamiliar and chilling.
"I can feel myself," I muttered internally, "but what's this...?"
Instead of flesh or skin, my fingers encountered the cold, skeletal structure of a ribcage.
Panic surged through me as I explored further, finding the same skeletal composition where my body should have been whole.
Thoughts clouded my mind as I continued to touch various parts of my body, confirming the skeletal structure's presence.
"What's happened to me...?" I whispered into the emptiness an unanswered question.
I tried looking around, but there was nothing to see—just an unending spectrum of blackness. It was as if nothing but me existed in this desolate realm.
"Where am I anyway?" My words hung in the air, unanswered, as I grappled with the incomprehensible nature of my surroundings.
Amidst the thick curtain of darkness, a glimmer caught my attention. A faint, shimmering light started to form, piercing the abyss like a distant star heralding dawn. It was a sight so unexpected that it drew me out of my despair.
As the seconds passed, the speck of light grew steadily brighter and more defined.
It expanded, blossoming into a translucent, ethereal form. It was a being of otherworldly beauty, a presence that defied the void's emptiness.
Astonishment choked my words, but before I could utter a sound, the figure addressed me.
Its voice was dulcet yet distant, echoing through the abyss like a haunting melody.
"Are you the one I have been tasked to guide?" It inquired, its words carrying the weight of stoic detachment and grand knowledge.
Caught off guard, I fumbled for words, struggling to make sense of this surreal encounter amidst the vast void. "I... I might be. I don't even know where 'here' is," I stammered, my voice trembling with uncertainty.
The figure studied me, its piercing gaze almost tangible even in this ethereal form. The silence stretched, pregnant with unspoken revelations, before it intoned, "Such a tragic fate you have met."
Gulping, I ventured, "Do you mean... my death?" The query hung in the air, heavy with implications that sent shivers through my being.
The being nodded solemnly, a gesture that transcended the boundaries of mere physicality. It was as though its essence resonated with the gravity of the revelation.
"Can you tell me where I am? And who you are?" The questions tumbled from my lips, my voice slightly quivering as I grappled with the profound implications of my new existence.
Drawing closer, its essence almost translucent, the etheric being responded in a tone that remained stoic, unfazed by my inquiries.
"I am a harbinger of sorts, a Guide Phantoul. Typically, souls journey to the afterlife after death, but you are ensnared within your personal limbo, moulded by your will."
It continued, "A powerful force, embedded deeply in your soul, anchors you here. Whether compelled by retaliation or seeking peace, that remains your own mystery. But for now, you stand as a Dormant Archon."
I fixed my eyes intently on the Phantoul, my brow furrowed in puzzlement. The weight of its revelation hung heavily, and a slew of questions raced through my mind.
With urgency in my voice, I pressed, "My family... especially my mother. Are they in the afterlife?"
The Phantoul's ethereal gaze met mine. "Indeed. They have moved on."
Trying to grapple with the enormity of what I'd just been told, I shot back, "How am I to trust your words?" My scepticism laced each word, a reflection of the uncertainty that gnawed at my core.
"Trust, Lyssa Anastasia, can be both a boon and a bane. While I am your guide, it is your intuition and will that will truly shape your destiny." The Phantoul replied, its stoic demeanour unwavering.
A pause settled between us, the weight of its words sinking in.
"Your immediate task is to break free from this self-imposed limbo. Wherever your soul anchors next, expect my guiding presence."
As the Phantoul's voice faded, so did its form, immersing me once more in solitude and a sea of unanswered questions.
Each word the Guide Phantoul had uttered replayed in my mind, like a haunting melody that refuses to be forgotten. "Your intuition and will will truly shape my destiny."
Slowly, as if moving through a dense medium, I lifted the skeletal remnants of my hand, the bony fingers stretching towards the encompassing void.
My focus sharpened on trying to grasp or tune into any hint of energy, whatever energy might exist in this limbo.
Then, a peculiar feeling began building within me.
It wasn't exactly 'feeling' in the conventional sense—my current state seemed to have transcended such norms—but it was the closest descriptor I could muster.
A raw, jagged sensation similar to pain, yet not entirely. This was something different, something powerful.
This energy swirled, coursing through the hollow spaces of my skeletal form, eerily reminiscent of nerve impulses.
Amidst this torrent of energy, a singular memory flashed—my ability to reflect pain.
The energy around me pulsated with a force I had never felt before, and before my very eyes, a rift, tinged with an ominous grey hue, began tearing through the abyss.
A triumphant thought: "I did it! I—" was abruptly cut off as the rift began to close alarmingly fast.
The urgency of the situation bore down on me, and a niggling voice in my mind whispered for action. That same intuition.
Without a second thought, I thrust myself towards the rapidly shrinking rift.
"Mother would have taken the leap, wouldn't she?" I mused, drawing upon her memory for strength.
Even now, the question of what she would do in my place continues to haunt me.
As my body crossed the threshold, an indescribable sensation engulfed me.
It was as if my very soul was being torn apart, a sensation far from gentle. It felt raw and jagged, akin to a precious fabric being recklessly ripped apart.
This internal chaos, this division of self within me, left no room for comfort or solace.
Though devoid of physical pain—for that requires flesh and nerves—waves of intense disorientation consumed me.
Within that perplexing span, my form elongated and distorted as if being pulled in all directions.
Suddenly, the stretching ceased, and the darkness, like a shroud, receded, unveiling a vast and vibrant world. Lush grass extended as far as the eye could see, swaying in a gentle breeze under a cerulean sky.
"What is this place...?"
The colours around me seemed enhanced, more vibrant than any hues I remembered from my previous life.
As I tried to move, I realised that the skeletal form I had in my limbo was gone. In its place, I felt a renewed physical presence.
Taking a moment to observe, I noticed a single path, paved with cobblestones, winding through the vast meadow.
As I took my first step onto the cobblestone path, the stones felt oddly pliable, like stepping on a firm sponge.
Bird-like creatures flew overhead, but they emitted soft glows, their songs sounding like harmonised whispers rather than typical chirps.
Meanwhile, the grass around the path, though green, occasionally shifted colours, cycling through a spectrum before settling back to its original hue.
Navigating the intriguing landscape before me, I tread carefully, each step melding harmoniously with the environment, a melody exotic to my senses.
My moment of harmony was disrupted when a soft disturbance brushed the edge of my senses. Initially, it was a mere whisper, like a breeze through the trees. But steadily, it evolved, growing more pronounced.
With it came a muted symphony of voices. They weren't loud or demanding, but rather noiseless, reminiscent of secret conversations shared in twilight hours.
The gentle cadence of these hushed voices grew increasingly louder, almost like the rise and fall of a far-off tide.
I paused, attempting to filter out the surrounding ambient noises to discern any clear words or phrases from the approaching presence.
Fragments of the words reached my conscious mind, "...fresh arrival... an archon...? ready the hunt...!" The essence behind these words carried a weight of intent and mystery.
Before I could ponder their meaning, the sharp blare of a battle horn cut through the whispers.
Nestling myself among the trunks, I tried to slow my racing heart and peered out cautiously.
From my makeshift hideout, I peered out tentatively and saw an entire battalion on the march, their unusual armour glinting menacingly and weapons at the ready.
An internal scream of frustration rang out: "Of all the times to disappear, why now?" I mentally berated the Guide Phantoul.
My ruminations were interrupted by a sudden shift in the atmosphere.
The previous rhythmic cadence of marching feet was replaced by a heightened tension, as if the air itself braced for what was to come.
Then, without warning, a barrage of arrows rained down. What was most disconcerting was their source.
They didn't just come from above, but from the shadows, the very ground beneath, and from places where arrows should not have originated.
Adrenaline pumped through me as I manoeuvred to evade the deluge. The very nature of this world, with its shifting parameters and oddities, made my evasive actions all the more challenging.
The zealous cries of the warriors echoed a chaotic blend of fervour and determination.
But one voice, noticeably more authoritative and laden with exasperation, rose above the rest. "Cease fire! We're after the new Archon, not some maiden in the forest!"
Drawing a shaky breath, I mused, still hidden.
"Archon? The guide did mention something about that."
The guide labelled me as a dormant one. But can I even trust that ethereal entity?
The receding footsteps left behind a stifling silence. The group's retreat, though a temporary reprieve, underscored an urgency that permeated the air.
Remaining stationary was a luxury I couldn’t afford.
Once the distant footfalls faded into silence, I carefully rose from my concealed position.
My gaze darted around, assessing the best route to take.
Picking myself up, I cautiously surveyed the forest, its every shadow beckoning danger. My eyes caught a faint trail, like a secret path through the underbrush.
Trusting my instincts, I ventured deeper into the shifting forest, trying to put distance between me and the looming threat.
Guided by a potent mix of caution and instinct, I embarked deeper into the woods. However, my guard, momentarily lowered, was my downfall. An unforeseen force tackled me, sending me crashing to the soft forest floor.
Shaken and slightly disoriented, I attempted to rise. "What now?" I murmured, irritation lacing my voice, summoning the protective shadows around me.
Glancing up, I found myself face-to-face with a man, his hands wrapped tightly around my throat.
His eyes burned with a mix of anger and fear. His grip tightened.
"Vile creature," he spat, his voice quivering with bottled rage. "You've taken everything from me."
Gasping, I croaked, "Who are you?" The once-obedient shadows now seemed to rebel, skittering away.
The intensity in the man's eyes was unwavering.
His eyes were fierce, bearing down on me with a rage I had yet to understand. "You destroyed my family, my home!" His grip tightened even further, claws forming from his once-human nails.
Even as the pain intensified, a passive power within me began to stir—my ability to reflect pain.
The sudden jolt of pain surprised him, but his grip tightened even more.
His eyes widened in shock, clearly unprepared for the sudden onset of pain. Yet, he managed to hiss, "You cursed Archon..."
"I honestly don't remember any of this," I replied, wincing as his claws delved deeper. My voice was a mix of confusion and growing resentment.
"Because it hasn't happened yet. I've journeyed from the future to halt your path of destruction."
My fear and confusion reached a point where they were uncontrollable.
For a moment, the world seemed slow. A sudden inversion of emotions occurred. I felt a sudden drain, a pull.
My burgeoning fear was waning, and instead, a rising tide of terror emanated from him. The more he felt it, the more his resolve faltered.
His grip broke entirely, allowing me to scramble to my feet. Gasping for air, I watched him retreat, his footsteps punctuated by a horrified scream.
I stood there, disoriented and shaken. "What just happened? Who was he? And more importantly, what's going to happen in the future...?" I couldn't help but wonder.
Yet, before I could gather my bearings, a blinding light encircled the vicinity. Shielding my eyes, the Phantoul's familiar form coalesced from the luminance.
I bit back my initial relief, letting frustration take its place. "Convenient timing," I remarked, irritation evident.
"I was acquiring something." It replied in that otherworldly, haunting tone it always carried.
Raising an eyebrow, I shot it a sceptical look, my arms crossing defensively. "It seems all too convenient. You're here now, just after that man left. It was almost as if you were avoiding the confrontation."
The Phantoul's ethereal eyes locked onto mine, unfazed by my accusation. "I was waiting," it declared, voice as passionless as ever.
Narrowing my eyes, I asked, "That man who attacked me, who was he? Why did he run away so suddenly?"
"The essence of your fear was transmitted to him, amplifying it a hundredfold. It is a rare occurrence," the Phantoul elucidated. "Perhaps you have now severed your bonds with fear, possibly rendering you incapable of feeling it henceforth."
"My fear transmitted?" I pondered. "And what's this recurring term, 'Archon'? The Phantoul said most souls move to the afterlife, yet something in mine has tethered me here. How does being an Archon factor into this? Just what is an Archon?"
"What were you acquiring?" I asked, my curiosity growing.
The Phantoul raised an ethereal hand, unveiling a dark, shimmering crystal. "This," it whispered, its eyes meeting mine with gravity.
I took a closer look at the crystal; its darkness was hypnotic. A sense of recognition washed over me. This was a Death Crystal.
I stared at the crystal; its depth was captivating. A rush of familiarity consumed me. "That's a Death Crystal! Where did you get it?!"
"From the anti-realm," it began, its voice resonating with a mysterious echo, hinting at places and realms beyond comprehension. "It is on the same higher plane as the afterlife, a realm that is the polar opposite of existence. Only Phantouls are attuned to traverse its depths." It responded.
As I listened to the Phantoul's answer, a memory resurfaced, and a familiar voice echoed in the forefront of my consciousness.
"It's truly unfortunate how many don't understand the sheer impossibility of procuring a death crystal..." The thought crystallised in my mind. Was this what the Queen meant? But then, how did she know? How did the kingdom know what one looked like...? I pondered.
The phantoul motioned to a peculiar gap in my abdomen. Only now did I notice its presence, "Place it there." It instructed.
Hesitation gripped me as I recalled the dangers I learned about in my past life.
As I took hold of the black crystal, a chill emanated from it, crawling up my fingers and pulsating through my arm.
The weight of the crystal was surprisingly heavy, both in its physical form and the energy it exuded.
As the crystal settled into its designated space, an overwhelming rush of energy surged through me. "I... what is this?" I stammered. Memories—not my own—began to flood my mind.
My knees buckled, and I found myself teetering back, trying desperately to process the sheer magnitude of the visions.
Among them, a common theme emerged: death. Moments of final breaths, the stilling of hearts, and the cold embrace of the inevitable end are all vivid and poignant.
Gasping for breath, I managed to raise my head, seeking clarity. The Phantoul's gaze met mine—its eyes clear yet unfathomable. There was an intensity, an expectant pause, in its examination.
"What did you do?" My voice wavered, with each word punctuated by the undulating waves of exotic emotions and memories coursing through me.
"The Death Crystal is merging with you," the Phantoul explained, its voice as calm and detached as ever. "Those memories are from the future."
I locked eyes with the Phantoul. As its gaze bore into me, my personality underwent a rapid transformation.
The Death Crystal pulsed with an eerie, otherworldly glow. From its dark heart, obsidian tendrils began to unfurl, binding tighter and tighter.
They coiled around me, their grip growing tighter and more insistent with each passing second. My feeble attempts at resistance proved futile as the tendrils ensnared me.
Just as the world began to blur at the edges, the phantoul's voice, cold and distant yet echoing with command, quoted in my ears.
"You now bear the mantle of the Archon of Death." Those profound words became an echo in the recesses of my mind, the last vestiges of consciousness before I succumbed to an abyss of slumber.
