[ONE WEEK LATER]
As I gazed into the rising sun and the golden horizon, I heard the oddly familiar and enthusiastic footsteps of Arisu. The warm hues of dawn played across her features, and her eyes flashed with anticipation.
"Lyssa!" She called out, "Follow me; I want to talk about something!"
I turned around to see her sprinting at me at high speeds. Her hand was high in the air while a bright, radiant orb hovered on her palm.
She really wanted my attention.
"Why, may I ask?"
I narrowed my eyes in apprehension, all while attempting to sound ordinary.
"Come on, it's something new! And fun!"
Her hair waved as she eventually arrived beside me. She put on an optimistic smile as she pulled on my arm while walking back.
After a while of pulling, we arrived at her home, where Kei was sitting on a rigid chair and drinking some foreign beverage.
"So you brought her too?"
He sounded a bit pleased about that but also irritated, presumably at Arisu, though.
Arisu grinned, her energy unfazed by Kei's subtle irritation. "Of course I did! Lyssa, you'll love it, I promise!"
"Arisu," I began, "what's this 'new' and 'fun' thing you're so eager about? It better not be flying blades this time."
"Oh, it isn't flying knives this time."
Arisu's grin turned into a normal smile. Something rare, which usually meant something normal, was truly going to happen.
Arisu took a seat on one of the wooden chairs opposite Kei and motioned for me to sit down on the third between the two.
"We're going to go on an adventure!"
Arisu exclaimed enthusiastically as she leapt up from the chair she sat in just moments ago.
The room silenced itself for a few seconds not long afterwards; Kei glimpsed at her as if she were jesting—which she wasn't, by the way—and narrowed his eyes.
"Why?"
Arisu's eyes sparkled with even more excitement. "Lyssa's been stuck in her own bubble for too long. And I thought we should go on an adventure together to show her what the outside world's like."
Kei's eyes widened; it was clear he wasn't anticipating that response from someone like her.
"An adventure, you say?"
"Exactly! We're going to venture into the unknown, discover hidden treasures, and make memories that'll last a lifetime."
I could see Kei's curiosity piqued despite his initial reluctance, his stoic facade cracking just a bit.
The corners of his lips tugged upward ever so subtly, a glimmer of intrigue in his eyes. It was a rare sight, for Kei rarely showed any emotion beyond indifference, but Arisu's proposal had managed to elicit a spark of interest and a hint of excitement.
"Where do you have in mind?"
"It's... a secret!"
A mischievous glint danced in Arisu's eyes as she playfully winked, a subtle yet vibrant gesture that added a touch of whimsy to the atmosphere.
Kei and I exchanged glances; a brief, shared exchange transpired, an unspoken dialogue that needed no words.
"How dangerous is this? Is there any information or guidance we should be aware of? Is there
a plan, or are we just venturing into the unknown without a clear path? What could we encounter out there?"
His questions mirrored the very thoughts that had been swirling in my mind, almost as if he had a direct line to my thoughts.
"It's perfectly safe! I've been there before, and the people there are really fun and nice."
It felt like she wasn't telling us everything. Arisu's words held a hint of mystery, a hidden layer beneath her apparent excitement.
She was always one to go to extremes, though, so it would make sense if she was hiding any potential dangers.
"Arisu, you mentioned that you've been there before. What kind of place is it, exactly?"
I decided to dig a little deeper to get her to describe the place, hoping she would reveal more about the upcoming adventure.
Arisu leaned in closer, as if she were about to share an incredible secret.
"Its... a... secret~"
I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up. Arisu's mischievous smile was enough to know that her intentions weren't to divulge too much information about this mysterious place.
However, I didn't ponder the possibility of the mysterious place having clues about D.K. and that man I saw.
"When does this 'adventure' start?"
Kei's steely gaze bore into Arisu; his eyes fixed on her with relentless vehemence, clearly expecting an answer that left no room for vagueness.
"It starts tomorrow, so be prepared!"
"And what if I don't want to—"
"If you don't go, I'll make sure your eyes burn. I'll make sure your eyes burn with the relentless brilliance of a thousand suns, an eternal blaze that scorches not just your vision but etches searing light into the very depths of your soul."
Kei looked taken aback by that immediate response and pondered her words.
He probably knew she couldn't make him suffer a fate like that.
He wasn't one to be easily coerced into anything.
His indifference returned, but it was evident that he might consider this unusual proposal, if only for a moment.
"Arisu, we'll go, but we need more information. We can't embark on an adventure blindly."
I leaned forward, adding my voice to the mix.
"Oh, don't worry! I'll fill you in on the details, but it's more fun when you discover some things along the way. Trust me, it'll be an unforgettable experience!"
Arisu's face lit up with a brilliant smile.
Kei's expression remained composed, though the spark of curiosity in his eyes still smouldered beneath the surface. It was a curious sight to see him even remotely interested in an adventure.
"Fine, we'll go."
He finally conceded, though his voice still held a hint of reluctance.
Arisu clapped her hands with excitement, her energetic aura filling the room.
"Perfect! You won't regret it."
Arisu beamed, her enthusiasm radiating from every pore.
"Lyssa, meet me and Kei at the village centre tomorrow morning. I'll give you some supplies and stuff."
"Sure, I'll come later."
I replied with subtle scepticism, and with that, Arisu stood up and skipped out the door, leaving Kei and me alone in her house.
Kei's stoic gaze followed Arisu as she exited, his eyes narrowing slightly as if he were trying to decipher her true intentions.
"Lyssa, are you sure about this adventure thing? It sounds suspicious. Not to mention Arisu has strange ways of getting lost."
"I'm not entirely sure, but it's not like we have a choice. Arisu can be quite persistent."
"Right."
Kei nodded in agreement, his stoic facade cracking once again.
We both knew Arisu's unpredictability was a double-edged sword, a mixture of chaos and adventure.
[THE NEXT DAY]
As promised, I met Arisu and Kei at the village centre, and her energy levels were off the charts.
She handed us each a backpack filled with essentials, including food, water, and a few other items.
"Lyssa, put this on."
Arisu pulled out a peculiar amulet from her pocket and placed it around my neck.
"What's this for?"
I asked while eyeing the peculiar amulet Arisu had pulled from her pocket and was placed around my neck.
"It's for protection. Just in case."
Arisu replied with a very wry smile. It felt like she did it on purpose to make me feel sceptical.
"It's not going to make me glow, is it?"
"No, no glowing involved! Like I said, it's just for protection."
Her wry smile remained, leaving me with an inkling that there might be more to this amulet than meets the eye.
Arisu's mischievous smile returned—a subtle gesture that hinted at something more.
Kei was sceptical, but he didn't protest.
"Arisu, where are we going, exactly? You haven't told us anything."
"There's no point asking."
I answered for Arisu. She never revealed all our destination points during these conversations anyway.
We set off, following Arisu's lead.
We walked for about two hours, the sun beating down on us as we trekked through the wilderness.
Kei and I exchanged glances, a silent conversation transpiring between us.
All I saw were trees, grass, and flowers. And animals too.
We continued walking for another hour, Arisu humming a cheerful tune as she led the way.
"Arisu has strange ways of getting lost."
The words echoed in my mind. How was there a 'strange way' to get lost?
A gasp from Arisu caught my attention. I instantly turned around; Arisu was pointing at human-like creatures.
Some had horns, some had claws, and some had tails or ears.
"Look! Hybrids!"
Arisu squealed like a child, discovering a hidden treasure trove of wonder in unnecessary excitement as she gazed upon these... hybrids on the mountainy land.
I was starting to think I was in a different world, a place I had always believed was impossible to exist within the confines of our understanding.
Such creatures were unheard of back in the world I knew, and even beyond it.
"Arisu... If there are hybrids here, that means we're past The Outskirts, where we shouldn't be."
Kei's voice held a hint of concern as he raised a point I had only just heard about.
"What are 'The Outskirts'?"
I let my mind muse for a bit before Kei noticed and somehow instantly knew what I was thinking about.
"Lyssa, The Outskirts are what separates our village from the outside world."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means we're protected from the outside. The village has maintained a fragile balance with the surrounding wilderness, and The Outskirts act as a barrier to keep us safe from what lies beyond."
The realisation hit me like a splash of cold water. We were stepping into a place where the village's protective shield wouldn't extend.
Although I couldn't help but quip.
"Should've told that to the orcs."
The three of us exchanged a glance, while Kei and I were silently contemplating the implications of venturing beyond The Outskirts.
"And that's where the amulet comes in!"
Arisu's flaunted the amulet, a shimmering trinket, with an air of mischievous charm.
As her fingers brushed against the pendant, her hand lingered slightly longer on her chest.
"Say, how did you two discover the existence of this 'protective barrier'?"
"According to school, it manifested organically a few years ago—its occurrence caught us completely by surprise."
Kei's eyes shifted to the horizon.
"The school never explained its origin or purpose. It was just there one day."
Kei continued, a hint of uncertainty in his words.
Arisu, shortly after, took the lead again—her energy was too much for a normal human to bear—and we followed her into the heart of the wilderness, leaving the safety of the village far behind.
"Arisu, can you at least tell us more about the place we're headed to?"
I prodded, hoping to gain some clarity.
Arisu, ever the enigmatic guide, unprecedentedly sighed furiously.
"Ugh, fine! It's a town that appeared once upon a time, and I visited it secretly to find out what it was about. I brought you guys along to explore. Happy?"
"Arisu, why are you keeping this town so secret from us? What are we really getting ourselves into?"
Arisu turned to me with a gaze so intense that it could feel like an icy wind cutting through the warmest of hearts.
It was a stare that bore into the very depths of one's soul, an unrelenting force that stripped away all pretences and exposed the vulnerability within.
For those who could feel fear, it was a gaze that made their blood run cold, their hearts race, and their breath catch in their throats.
It was a look that held the power to shatter the strongest resolve, leaving only a hollow shell of terror in its wake.
"You ask too many questions, Lyssa."
Arisu turned back around before skipping as if nothing had happened.
"We don't have that much more walking to do."
She continued taking the lead while I stared back at Kei, who seemed calm despite the situation.
It was as if he knew about this.
"It's rare, but... Arisu can get a tad bit aggressive sometimes."
Kei remarked, his voice maintaining its usual calm, yet a trace of concern lingered beneath the surface. Perhaps he was worried.
"Aggressive? In what way?"
I cast a sidelong glance at him as I probed further. Probing was something I was good at.
Kei's gaze remained fixed ahead of his measured response.
"She's impulsive, and when things don't go as planned, her impatience tends to surface. It's not a frequent occurrence, but it's something to be wary of."
As Kei's words settled in, my mind contemplated the layers hidden beneath Arisu's energetic exterior.
"That's interesting..."
"Kei, do you sense anything unusual?"
I queried in a hushed tone, aware of the need for discretion in unfamiliar surroundings.
I begin whispering a mere whisper in the untouched wilderness while inquiring to Kei.
He paused, his heightened senses attuned to the environment.
"Nothing alarming."
Kei's response was curt; his focus was on the path ahead.
I quickly realised Arisu's unpredictable nature was a double-edged sword, a mixture of chaos and tranquillity.
[MOMENTS LATER]
Kei, Arisu, and I had been wandering in the woods for hours, with no sight of civilization.
The sun was setting, and we were getting worried about finding a place to spend the night.
Suddenly, we saw a faint glow in the distance. As we walked closer, we could tell it was a small campfire with four tents set up around it. We approached cautiously, unsure of who might be there.
"...is this the town you were talking about?"
Kei turned to Arisu, who seemed just as confused as I was.
"Since when we're towns this small? This is a campsite." I said while peering into one of the tents.
However, the tent and even the whole campsite appeared to be deserted. There was no one in sight.
"This isn't the town! It's just something we happened to come across."
Arisu spoke up, her voice echoing in the stillness.
Kei, always vigilant, spoke again.
"Maybe we should find a place to rest for the night. We can't navigate the woods in complete darkness. Well, maybe I can."
I looked up at the dim, purple sky.
"Shall we rest here?"
We considered the empty tents, and a cold breeze swept through the woods, rustling the leaves overhead.
The twilight sky deepened into darkness, and a hushed silence settled around us.
Our only two choices were to rest here or wander through the darkness of the night.
Kei's heightened sensitivity to their surroundings compelled us to venture through the obscurity of the night.
We stepped away from the campsite, and the crunching of our footsteps on the ground seemed to be the only sound in the surrounding silence.
After a few minutes of walking, Kei's and my eyes met briefly, and I could tell that we both had a shared thought at that moment.
Arisu was nowhere in sight.
A tinge of concern in my voice crept out of my voice as I asked.
"Kei, do you know where Arisu is?"
"I saw her just a moment ago."
We both began to survey our surroundings, calling out her name, but there was no response.
"Arisu!"
Our voices resonated through the darkness, seeking any sign of her presence. Yet, the profound quietude persisted, leaving us standing in the eerie hush of the unknown.
I turned to Kei and asked.
"Where could she have gone?"
My eyes darted, scanning the dim surroundings for any trace of Arisu.
"Where are you, Arisu?"
There was no response; the silence mocked me as I looked all around the darkness.
"We should go back and retrace our steps."
Without a second thought, I nodded and turned around to head back to where we came from.
After a few minutes of walking, we found ourselves back at the campsite, our breaths visible in the chilly night air. Despite our thorough exploration, the tents remained empty, devoid of any trace of life.
Suddenly, Kei called out to me.
"Lyssa! I found Arisu!"
I quickly turned in his direction and saw that he was peering into a hole in the ground. It was then that I realised that Arisu had fallen into a pitfall.
I crouched down beside Kei, peering into the hole where Arisu had fallen. The pitfall was deep, its darkness concealing Arisu's figure.
She flashed a mischievous and slightly embarrassed grin that immediately caught our attention.
"Hey there!"
My voice echoed into the depths as I asked.
"Are you alright, Arisu?"
Arisu nodded, her face screaming, "I meant to fall in here."
Kei let out a heavy sigh, his eyes scanning the desolate surroundings as he shook his head in disappointment.
He extended his hand towards Arisu, and as it touched her, it transformed into a reddish, dark glob that pulled her out of the pitfall as he muttered under his breath.
"Leave it to Arisu to discover a pitfall in the middle of nowhere."
Arisu heard his words and protested against them.
"Hey! I could have made it out myself!"
"You weren't going to either way."
"Of course I would!"
"Then why didn't you now?"
Arisu paused for a moment, her mind racing with thoughts as she pondered it. "I just felt like taking the scenic route."
She dusted herself off and let out an "I meant to do that" smile.
Kei rolled his eyes, but a faint smile played on his lips.
"Let's just find a safer place to rest for the night."
I watched as they helped each other out of the pitfall and continued on their journey towards wherever Arisu was leading us.
I pondered over Kei's ability to transform a glob in his hand. I couldn't help but wonder what other abilities he possessed besides his hyperawareness.
Suddenly, Arisu's body started glowing, pulling me out of my thoughts. The light emanating from her body spread far and wide.
"You could have done this the whole time?"
I turned to the now glowing Arisu with confusion.
"Maybe... Maybe not."
Arisu's voice was filled with enigma as she led the way again. I sighed, and Kei could most likely sense my frustration as we continued walking.
Kei caught up to Arisu, and he asked a few questions.
"Won't we need to rest at some point? How far is this place anyway?"
"We're only halfway there!"
Arisu replied enthusiastically. Then, with a hint of regret, Kei added.
"...I shouldn't have accepted."
As we kept walking, I wondered if there was a way to get to our destination faster.
"Is there a faster way to get there?"
Arisu stopped in her tracks for a moment, probably lost in thought, before finally answering.
"There is."
I was relieved to hear that there was indeed a faster way to get to our destination.
"Then can you tell us-"
"But I won't tell you!"
I was taken aback by her interruption, and I couldn't help but feel a bit frustrated, but I tried to remain patient and understanding.
Kei, however, was frustrated and couldn't hold back his emotions anymore. He shouted out loud.
"Why?!"
It was a rare sight to see someone as calm and stoic as Kei lose his composure.
"I want this time to be peaceful before we get there."
Kei's voice was heavy with concern and apprehension as he asked.
"So the town isn't going to be peaceful, is that what you're saying?"
"No, that's not what I meant! I want the town to be a surprise. I want us to have a peaceful introduction before the wonders of it hit us."
Arisu glanced back, her eyes reflecting her usual playfulness.
The air between us grew heavy with silence for a few minutes before I finally spoke up, hoping to break the quiet atmosphere.
"Hey Arisu, do you think we're getting close to the town?"
Arisu's response was vague, but there was a mischievous glint in her eyes that made me wonder what she was thinking.
"'Close' is a relative term. But don't worry; there are still more surprises in store for you."
Kei, who had been mostly quiet, spoke up.
"I'm curious about something."
"What are you curious about?" Arisu asked.
"Why was there a pitfall in the first place?"
The question posed by Kei hung in the silence, refusing to dissipate.
Arisu took a moment. took a moment to process the question. The silence stretched on, and it seemed like no one could come up with an answer.
Arisu finally spoke up, breaking the stillness.
"That's a good question." Arisu said. But she quickly diverted the conversation.
"But let's not dwell on it." She said with a wave of her hand. "We're almost at our destination."
After a while, we turned a corner near a cliff, and Arisu suddenly stopped and pointed to a huge gate that loomed before us.
"This is it!"
Kei looked sceptically at the huge gate, while I couldn't help but feel a bit surprised by its size and grandeur. But Arisu crossed the threshold without hesitation, and soon enough, we followed suit.
Arisu smiled knowingly, as if she had been expecting this all along, which she has.
"Welcome to Mythril Haven. A wonderful place inhabited by hybrids only!"
She announced proudly while gesturing around her. Kei walked up to her and added.
"You know I expected much worse."
Though he wasn't wrong, I took a grand look at the place, the perfectly built building, the lush flora, and the intricately carved paths.
It even smelled fresh-not saying Obirokuro Bomu didn't, but still. Everything seemed perfect; it made Obirokuro Bomu look like it came out of a swamp.
Not to mention, the whole damn place was massive. I didn't think it could even be called a town.
Although it was dark out, we could still see clearly how amazing this place looked.
"C'mon, let's go explore!"
Arisu grabbed both of us into the depths of this... 'Labyrinth' is what I'd call it. And while Arisu wanted me to have a good time, I was more keen on finding answers to whether I was in a new world and who D.K. was.
"Hey Arisu? How come the hybrids aren't wondering how you got in."
Kei's voice was calm, yet his words hinted at a genuine inquiry.
Arisu, always the spark in our group, didn't hesitate to respond.
"They're my friends."
Kei's skeptical expression didn't escape her notice, and it prompted a playful retort.
"Of course, it's you who would befriend them."
"And what's that supposed to mean?"
Arisu's dark eyes bore into Kei's with intensity, their gaze piercing through the playful banter, creating a momentary tension.
Caught off guard by the sharpness of Arisu's glare, Kei's response held a hint of defense.
"Nothing..."
Arisu smiled before turning back.
Soon after, our journey through the labyrinthine streets brought us to an inn, its inviting lights spilling onto the cobblestone path.
"Kei, Lyssa. Let's find an inn and rest. Tomorrow, we delve into the mysteries of Mythril Haven."
Kei wore a visible reluctance on his face, his stoic demeanor hinting at a preference for action over repose.
Contrarily, I surprised everyone, as I welcomed the idea of resting at the inn with an unexpected sense of calm.
The inn's entrance beckoned, promising respite after a night of surprises.
As we stepped inside, the warmth of the hearth greeted us, and the innkeeper offered a welcoming smile.
The innkeeper looked human but had crystal-like wings. They also seemed to have some fur around their arms and legs.
"Three rooms, please." Arisu requested, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.
As Arisu secured our accommodations, the crystal-winged innkeeper gestured for us to follow.
The inn's interior exuded a tranquil ambiance, the walls adorned with intricate carvings depicting the town's history.
We ascended a spiraled staircase, the steps silent beneath our feet.
Arisu's eyes gleamed with excitement, and Kei's stoic expression hinted at a reserved curiosity.
The innkeeper led us down a corridor adorned with ethereal paintings, each depicting the diverse hybrid inhabitants of Mythril Haven.
After a while, we reached our rooms, each door marked with a unique symbol.
The innkeeper handed us the keys with a gracious smile, their crystal-like wings shimmering in the soft glow of the hallway.
"Enjoy your stay in Mythril Haven. If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask."
The innkeeper waved at us warmly before gliding away, leaving us to the enchanting quietude of the inn.
Arisu unlocked the door to her room with an eagerness that matched her spirited personality.
Kei and I followed suit, entering our respective chambers.
The room embraced me with warmth, a large window overlooking the hybrid town.
The furnishings bore an elegant simplicity, and the bed promised a night of peaceful rest.
As I settled in, the anticipation of uncovering the town's mysteries lingered in the air.
Arisu's voice echoed from the adjacent room. "I can't wait to explore again tomorrow! This place is full of surprises!"
While Arisu was yelling as loud as an explosion. I pondered how I would go about asking the Hybrids about D.K..
As I lay on the small bed, thoughts of the journey so far and the intriguing town filled my mind.
And I closed my eyes, drifting off into a deep slumber.
I opened my eyes. It was a new day. The golden glow from the outside shone all around my room.
I got up from bed and walked over to the bathroom.
Even from there, I could hear Arisu's excitement.
"This'll be hard to endure..." I thought.
After a few minutes, I exited the bathroom and began exiting my room.
As soon as I opened the door, I was greeted by a beautiful face, adorned by gleaming light-blue hair.
It was Arisu…
The walking disaster…
In front of my room…
Her eyes sparkled with joy, and she smiled brightly at me. I stepped into the corridor, my senses tingling with Arisu's contagious excitement.
I asked with a sigh.
"What are you doing here?"
Arisu beamed, her light-blue hair dancing with every little movement she made.
"Getting you so we can explore the hidden corners of Mythril Haven! Adventure awaits, Lyssa!"
"So we're just going to skip eating?"
"Of course!"
Arisu replied with a wide grin that lit up her face.
I stepped back into my room, eyeing Arisu's infectious excitement as I declared, emphasising practicality.
"Exploring can wait; I need sustenance first."
Arisu pouted.
"Food can wait, Lyssa! Mythril Haven has secrets waiting to be unravelled."
I turned around and faced Arisu, crossing my arms.
"Secrets can wait too. Food is more important."
"Lyyyyysssssaaaaaa..."
Arisu whined, her light-blue hair dimming as if mirroring her mood.
"No." I said with finality.
A pout formed on Arisu's lips.
"But exploring Mythril Haven is fun."
"Eating is also fun."
I countered, maintaining my resolve. The banter continued as Arisu tried to sway me.
"You're no fun."
"And you're impatient."
"Come ooooonnnn, Lyssa. Let's gooooo."
Arisu whined, giving me puppy-dog eyes.
I sighed. "Fine. But only after breakfast."
I relented, and a subtle "Yay!" escaped Arisu's lips. As if in response to her joy, her hair began to regain its radiance, its strands dancing with renewed vibrancy.
"Let's go then."
I said, standing up and stretching my arms.
"After breakfast."
Arisu groaned, letting out a long sigh.
"Ughhhh. Fine."
I smiled, knowing that I had won this round.
"Good."
As we lay there in silence, I turned to Arisu and asked.
“Have you woken up, Kei, yet?“
I gazed at Arisu as she plopped onto my bed.
"Nope."
Arisu bounced off my bed, her hair radiantly dancing.
Arisu's peculiar habit of leaping onto my bed only to promptly bounce back down like a spring-loaded gazelle remained a mystery.
"So you woke me up, but not Kei?"
"Yes. That's exactly what I did."
"... You're really making me not want to do this."
I opened the door and stepped into the hallway with Arisu.
"Why though? You're my minion, and you'll listen to me."
She demanded, crossing her arms.
"Not before eating; I don't. And besides, I'm not your minion."
"Aww."
As we descended the stairs, I spotted Kei sitting in the inn's common room, patiently eating breakfast.
"Oh, so he is awake."
Arisu whispered to herself, her eyes fixed on Kei as he ate his meal.
"So, what's the plan for today's exploration, Arisu?"
I asked, trying to balance curiosity with the urgency of satisfying my hunger. Arisu grinned in response.
"Oh, you'll love this! There's a library in Mythril Haven with ancient scrolls and—"
"Please don't ramble on. I'm trying to eat."
Kei paused Arisu before her rambling became infinite.
After we ate, Arisu instantly jumped up from her chair, startling the other Hybrids.
"I'm done; time to go!"
"But—"
"Time. To. Go."
Arisu persistently pleaded with one of her usual creepy smiles; her light-blue hair mirrored her mood.
Finally giving in, I agreed to explore Mythril Haven.
As we ventured into the hidden corners of Mythril Haven, Arisu's excitement bubbled over.
However, my attention kept drifting back to the green crystal mentioned in the orc memories.
I opened the door, and the bustling sounds of Mythril Haven greeted us. Arisu skipped ahead, her radiant light-blue hair drawing attention.
The town's hybrid inhabitants went about their daily routines, casting curious glances our way.
"Where to first, Arisu?" I inquired, following her lead through the lively streets.
Arisu twirled, her excitement infectious. "Let's check out the market, Lyssa! There might be exotic items."
Kei intervened.
"Arisu, how long do you—"
Arisu silenced him with a glance and an eerie smile.
"Kei, respectfully, shut the fuck up."
I exchanged a glance with Kei, who shrugged in response. Following Arisu's lead, we headed towards the bustling market. Arisu's light-blue hair drew attention as we navigated through the lively streets.
As we approached the market square, Arisu's eyes widened with anticipation. "Oh, Lyssa, you're going to love this! There's a peculiar stall that sells enchanted trinkets."
I raised an eyebrow, intrigued despite myself. "Enchanted trinkets? What kind of items are we talking about?"
Arisu's grin widened, and she pulled me towards the stall. "You'll see! this way!"
I rolled my eyes, wondering why she insisted on keeping everything so hush-hush.
But I followed her anyway—after all, trust was important, right?
Arisu stopped at a small, dingy stall with trinkets piled high. The stall owner, an old-looking hybrid with dragon-like clawed hands, glared at us suspiciously.
"Ah, that one."
Arisu pointed at a pendant hanging in the back, half-hidden behind other baubles.
"How much?"
"Three hundred Lythrium fossils."
The woman replied gruffly.
"One hundred."
Arisu countered, her eyes narrowing. I could tell she wasn't going to budge. Neither would the woman, it seemed.
"Two hundred and fifty."
"One hundred and fifty."
"Fine, two hundred and fifteen. But not a fossil less."
"Deal."
I sighed, leaning against the stall. What was so special about this trinket? Why did Arisu want it? And more importantly, why couldn't she just tell me?
"Here's your trinket."
The woman handed over the pendant, snatching the gold coins from Arisu's hand.
"Thank you."
Arisu smiled sweetly before turning to leave, pulling me along with her. As we walked, she clutched the pendant tightly, as if afraid someone would try to take it from her.
"Alright, Arisu. What's the big secret? Why did we have to come all this way for a stupid little trinket?"
I said finally, frustration boiling over.
She offered me a smile, but her eyes were guarded.
"Lyssa, I promise I'll explain everything soon. Just trust me, okay?"
"Fine," I muttered, crossing my arms. "But you better have a good explanation for all this."
"Trust me, Lyssa. I do."
We continued through the bustling streets of Mythril Haven, and my frustration simmered beneath the surface.
Arisu seemed intent on avoiding my questions, so I focused instead on the creatures and people we encountered.
"Look at that one," Kei whispered, nodding towards a man with the wings of a hawk sprouting from his back. A Hybrid. "I have never seen anything like it."
"Me neither," I admitted, watching as he flashed a predatory grin at another passer-by.
"Over here!"
Arisu called, disappearing down an alleyway. We followed her into a small courtyard filled with more beings than I'd ever imagined.
Creatures with the upper body of a human and the lower body and legs of a horse; small, shrivelled green humanoid people; even a woman with a fish tail for legs lounging in a large tub of water
"I can't believe all these creatures exist."
I murmured, taking in the scene.
With a twist of the wrist, Arisu was off again, leading us through the convoluted alleys of Mythril Haven.
I couldn't help but marvel at how the city seemed to pulse with life, each corner revealing a new secret.
Kei kept close beside me, his eyes wide with curiosity and apprehension.
"I never thought we'd end up here." He muttered.
"Neither did I."
I agreed, my thoughts wandering to the reason that had brought us here in the first place.
There was something about this place, something hidden beneath its shimmering surface.
"Come on!"
Arisu called from ahead, her feline grace allowing her to navigate the maze-like streets effortlessly.
"You don't want to miss this."
I exchanged glances with Kei, and together we picked up our pace, following our capricious guide deeper into Mythril Haven.
The buildings seemed to lean in closer, their shadows stretching out like fingers trying to snatch us away.
"Here it is!"
Arisu announced with a triumphant flourish as she led us around one final bend.
The ground fell away before us, dropping into a sheer cliffside that revealed a breathtaking panorama of the town below.
"Wow."
I breathed, inching closer to the edge to take in the view.
The labyrinthine streets unfurled beneath me like an intricate tapestry, interwoven with iridescent threads of magic.
The sight was enough to take my breath away.
Arisu preened, her chest puffing out with pride.
"Isn't it amazing?"
"Maybe?" Kei replied.
"I have never seen anything like it."
"Few have. This spot's known only to a select few. Consider yourselves lucky."
Arisu said smugly.
"Thanks for showing us."
I told her.
Despite my growing impatience to continue our search, I couldn't deny the beauty of this hidden gem.
"Of course!"
Arisu beamed, then turned back towards the town.
"Now, let's get back to exploring. There's still so much more to see!"
After a long while of pointless exploring, we stopped for a break.
The sun beat down on us as we leaned against a crumbling stone wall.
My throat felt parched, and I longed to find some answers. All this sightseeing was starting to grate on me.
"Hey, you guys, go ahead. I just remembered I needed to pick up something nearby. I'll catch up later."
"Are you sure?"
Kei asked, concern etched on his face.
"Positive. Don't worry about me."
I waved them off with that lie.
"Alright, see you later."
Arisu shrugged.
As they vanished around the corner, I set off in search of someone who might know more about D.K.
I approached a tall, burly hybrid with the head of a lion.
"Excuse me. Have you ever heard of someone called D.K.?"
The lion-man scowled.
"D.K? Yeah, I've heard of them. Never seen him though. People say they're whatever you believe them to be."
I raised an eyebrow.
"Really?"
"Yep, but watch out. He's trouble."
"Thanks for the warning."
I nodded, mentally making a note of his words. As I continued on my search, I spotted a bizarre figure slithering through the crowd.
It was a snake woman, her long, scaly body twisting and turning as she made her way through the throngs of people.
"Hello."
I greeted her, hoping she might have some more information about D.K.
"Do you know anything about D.K?"
"Ah, D.K…"
She hissed, her forked tongue flickering.
"I've heard the name. They say they can take any form. But one thing's for sure: empathy isn't in their dictionary."
"Interesting."
I stored the knowledge away, thanking her before continuing my pursuit.
Each hybrid I encountered had a parallel story. Some claimed they were a giant, others a dwarf. One even insisted they were an imperceptible spirit.
But every single one agreed on two things: D.K. was a problem and lacked empathy.
As I roamed the serpentine streets, I couldn't help but wonder who—or what—D.K. was.
And more importantly, why did everyone seem to know them, yet nobody had ever seen them, and why had they been targeting me for whatever plot they had?
I shook my head, trying to clear away my doubts.
Whatever the truth, I had to find them and find out what they knew about my family.
I decided to turn my attention towards Valkami Kingdom, asking every hybrid I met about the kingdom.
But to my dismay, every single one of them gave me a similar response.
"What is Valkami Kingdom?"
"I've never heard of such a place."
"Valkami Kingdom is just your delusion; it doesn't exist anywhere but your own fantasies."
It was as if they were all reading from the same script.
I was left in utter disbelief. How could it be possible that not even a single hybrid had any knowledge of this place?
Had I been transported to another world just to fulfil my soul's insatiable desire for revenge against someone from a different realm?
Would I ever be able to find peace?
