Chapter 15 - Nickname

She was instructed to watch the cake box but Midori barely even glanced at the box, instead, she gazed out the window. Her sister was touching Sam’s cheek and annoying him by calling his name repeatedly, earning herself a shock when he abruptly turned his head, attempting to bite her fingers.

Her lips curved upward while looking at the two people in front. Nanaka laughed at the unexpected actions of Sam but somehow her laughter sounded hysterical in her ears. Most of the conversations were started by her sister, sometimes she joined then got pushed out. It was unintentional due to the circumstances but it inclined Midori to overthink for a few seconds.

Oh well, it’s not like something is going to happen to me if I don’t say it.

When they arrived at the place, the time that took them to park was a bit longer than expected. Because some signs that said the place was a private parking that needed to be paid, he drove the car in circles within the place, waiting for Nanaka to texted her boss.

“Yea, this is the right place.” She looked up from her phone, “You can park.”

When they came to the door of the restaurant, her sister almost mistook the door and entered the apartments upstairs.

“It’s this one.” Midori pointed to the door that had obvious opening hours on it.

“Oh, haha…”

Her sister pushed the door open and found the former boss dress in a silver dress turned around. Jacky parted her mouth, in her eyes were swelling emotions of surprise, “Lora!”

That was the nickname of her sister when she worked at Jacky’s sushi restaurant that was now sold to another person. It was supposed to be “Lola” but she couldn’t pronounce it with her Korean’s tongue.

Nanaka beamed and hugged the still young-looking middle-aged woman. “Hi.”

They talked for a bit then the woman turned to Midori, smiling with open arms. “Lori!”

For some reasons, she was nicknamed “Lori” after her sister. However, it was better than “Loli” now that she thought about. Wrapping her arms around Jacky, she gave her a hug. Afterwards, the woman shook Sam’s hand then they were introduced to the employed staffs.

It was awkward for her since they appeared at least ten years older than her and were standing behind the bar with rows of alcohol bottles lined up behind them. As an underage, even with interest in alcohols, it felt a bit weird for her so she just smiled and bowed her head to each one of them instead of saying “Hi.”

The female boss gave them a tour of the place then led them to their table and surprised her sister with the decorations near the window to the street. “This were the ones I gifted to you last year, you still have them?”

“Of course, they are pretty.” Jacky grinned and said, “Today is your day, eat and drink to the fullest, okay?”

After she left, they studied the menu she gave them. The things on it were ways cheaper than before since there wasn’t any sushi. The only thing that captured her eyes was the “Cold Ramen/Udon.”

Even though it’s not soba, cold ramen is still fine. I want to try cold noodle~!!

She pointed to the name and said, “I want to try this.”

“Oh. I’ll take you back when the store is opened.”

“...” Her browed creased slightly, “Wait, you mean we’re not eating what’s on the menu?”

“No. We’re eating the food you saw lining up on the other side when we enter,” Nanaka said.

“Oh.”

This is disappointing…

The restaurant opened in October and it was still exactly two months away.

“There’s drink over there, let’s get something.” Her sister stood up and she followed. When they got there and properly read the drinks’ name, Midori chose the Curiosity Cola.

It has herbs in here…?

After reading the label, she hesitated a bit since she had stopped drinking soda then twisted the cap open.

It’s just one day.

Whilst drinking the faintly bitter soda made from England, she bowed her head, engrossed in the game of shogi in her phone. Not that she was a shogi player but her writing had shogi in it and she needed at least the basic knowledge about it. That included on another thing— Airsoft. She had no first-hand experience playing airsoft and only watched Youtube or anime on it but her story had airsoft, and it was not an insignificant element. Midori sighed and took another sip of the soda.

The time to get food finally came and they lined up with plate(s) and utensils in their hands. She asked Nanaka to get her some fried dumplings and Sam volunteered to placed some sushi into her plate. At the noodle tray, she helped herself with the noodle seasoned with sesame oil and seeds. Midori made sure that the majority of the noodle she put into her plate was only noodle and carrot, the slight others could be removed later with chopsticks.

“It is good?” While eating, her sister asked.

“Yea.” The dumplings were crunchy and still good even without soy sauce. The sushi weren’t spicy as she reckons due to its warm colour sauce and actually tasted quite nice.

I could get more but…

The thought of going back there to get food lessened her appetite. Besides, her stomach was already 75% full, any more might gain her extra weighs.

Jacky visited their table and talked to Nanaka for the most part before voicing her surprise at how tall she had grown since the last time they saw each other and left to entertain other guests.

After her sister used the restroom, they went to the outdoor table in the back and sat there. They talked to each other and tasted the cake they got. After one bite, Midori pushed the paper bowl back to her sister. After the two adults ate a bit of it, even they couldn’t force themselves to say: “It’s good.”

“This is too sweet.” Sam furrowed his brows while picking on the cake and Nanaka also agreed at his statement. It appeared that the cake was to be trashed away at any time soon.
