Chapter 4 - It Was Nice...To Watch

I do not know…

Whatever the reason, I have no interest in being dragged to the core of darkness.

But I don’t want to be in the light either, not that it’s completely safe there anyhow.

You don’t have to, why not just walk at the border between the two. Besides, don’t be so egocentric.

What do you mean?

The darkness doesn’t carry you alone, it is beyond my abilities to count them all. You are not special just because you want to stay in the darkness.

I don’t need to be special! I just want to be different than the norms…

“Pff…”

This drama is quite comic.

A few weeks ago, Midori requested Nanaka to buy a non-fiction book for her. However, a few weeks later, she still hadn’t finished reading it. A successful person or CEOs read at least 30 books a year; that number was already dragged down from the original number that the video said.

Book or entertainment?

Entertainment, I would at least become a woman with a stable salary, working under other commands. Also, with me not getting married and have no friends, I would be forgotten about, before I even died. Sister will have her own family to think about.

...Do I want to be forgotten?

Picking up the book, she began to read. After a while, she looked at the page.

Wow, 15...That’s the farthest she has read on the first day.

The following day, Midori went to school as the usual weekdays, except for the black wedges she was wearing. Sitting at a cloth square stool, she opened the book and read, her ears were blocked with buds playing classical music. Flipped through 10 pages in no longer than 20 minutes, at least that was quick in her opinion for someone who had always dislike reading since young.

Then someone walked into the math hall, which attracted her attention from the book. The person was sauntering towards her.

...Uh…

“...” she smiled, “Hi Sorah.”

“Hey.”

...What to say now? ...Just smile and look excited to see her...

“So...How is your weekend?” Sorah asked as she sat down in front of her is a spinning chair.

Midori’s eyes moved behind the girl for a second before she answered, “It’s normal, I stayed at home. How about you?”

“I went out with my friends. I didn’t do my homework, too.”

“Oh…”

“I was to write an essay and it’s very long, I just don’t feel like writing it.”

“Oh...How is Honour Language Arts? I mean English?”

Sorah’s countenance changed, looking irritated. She sighed, “We were assigned to write an essay on the first day of school. Like seriously? It’s the first day.”

“...Wow,” she was slightly surprised.

I don’t think I want to even try being in honour classes for English...Anything but English...As long as it’s not athletic.

“General English should be way easier.”

“Yea…”

“But like, Language Arts is my forte so…”

Midori then asked her help on something in the subject that she still didn’t understand and the girl explained it to her.

“Oh…”

“Wow, this is the only subject that I can aid you on. I mean, you are so smart,” Sorah laughed.

Her eyelids lifted slightly and she chuckled, “Well, my forte is math and the others two but not English. I suck at English. On the midterm, I got an 82, the essay response was…”

You’re taking my time...can’t read…

Even though that was what Midori was thinking inside her head, trying to long the conversation as much as possible was the best choice. Besides, she didn’t dislike it and was gladded there were topics to talk about.

"Our forte is the opposite of each other, haha."

That day, she had a concert to perform in period 2— for Veteran Day.

After period 1, Midori went and got dressed in her wedges, it was part of her attire. She was asked when the concert would start by a fellow classmate,

“I don’t know exactly…”

By the end of class, she asked the teacher, “Can I go to the Orchestra room now?”

Mrs. Rosenwood looked at her casually, “You can go whenever you want.”

“...” She ran to the music hall and as she passed the Performing Art Center, there were sounds of string instruments playing. Midori’s eyes widened slightly, she didn’t know what to feel or what she was feeling.

They didn’t…

Opened the backstage door and of course, found the orchestra playing so majestically that the sound blasted into her face. With one of her weird and awkward smile, she closed the door quietly and ran to the orchestra rehearsal room. Her mood was a mixture of multiple emotions.

Stood in front of the board with no one around, she raised her head to face the ceiling.

The camera…

Midori unzippered her dress and then put her jacket onto her back. Whilst bowing, she pulled the dress down carefully not to slide the jacket off. She successfully took her dress off without being naked to the camera and zipped up her jacket. Putting the dress into a bag and inside her backpack, she entered the Performing Art Center through the back door.

Watching the concert at the back of the audiences, it was really nice.

Watching my own concert.

That was.

How embarrassing. I sat in class the whole time wearing the concert attire, on an uncomfortable stool chair. The girl asked me when the concert start, here, it started and I’m not playing. Ugh…! Doesn’t feel very pleasant… And having to wear this uncomfortable shoes for nothing?

At the end of the concert, she told the orchestra teacher that she was late. “I thought there would be an announcement or something but there isn’t. I didn’t know that I could go here without the teacher’s permission.”

Mr. Calish laughed it off and said, “Well now you know not to do that again next year.”

Smiled awkwardly while slightly nodding, Midori left for whatever is next on her schedule. That day was the worse day she has had in a while, but she felt glad that it happened.
