Winter Break went by quickly and Midori returned to school. Many of her class had seat changes, and for orchestra, she now would be sitting at the edge where the audiences would see her clearly.
In a month, there would be the contest for orchestra. New music scores were given out and they were not easy.
I didn’t expect them to be easy...It’s not middle school’s music, of course they’ll be hard…
She stared at the music and sighed. Turning her head to looked at the empty seats below the stage and swung her bow back and fore.
First time playing will not be good. Oh well, it’s not like I can play any of them the first time I see them, still made it into Chamber Orchestra and be a Stand Principal. But I really need to practice, I don’t have dual seating arrangement like in regular orchestra where I can cheat while being in A set-up: Sit in the middle and play Second Violin, which is easier.
Even though she complained a lot, she was excited because she was more than willing to play First Violin and sit where people can see her. One of her goal in high school was to be the Concertmaster, which was quite an impossible goal for such a lazy person like her.
Today, she decided that she would ask Mr. Aper about Model UN no matter what. Midori walked down the hallway and was about to arrive at Mr. Aper’s room. Her confidence swayed as she stood before the classroom.
Eh...Maybe tomorrow, there are too many people inside...But if I want to become a businesswoman, I need confidence. If I can’t even enter this room to ask for information, how am I ever going to have the confidence to even join and become a club member?
Midori lightly bit her lower lip, turned around and stood in front of the classroom. She knocked on the glass of the opened door to get Mr. Aper’s attention.
“Yes?” he turned to look at the door, along with the other students.
Uhm.
“Can I get some information about this club?”
“Oh sure, come in.” Signalling with his hand, allowing her to enter.
She was trapped there for around an hour, pretending to be a new member of the club. She almost sat on the high stool next to the teacher’s desk because she misunderstood Mr. Aper’s words.
...How embarrassing. He told me ‘no’ when I asked as I pointed at the stool, ‘here?’ Ahhh~!! There were many people there, too!
The information had seemingly damaged parts of her brain and determination. Midori extremely disliked writing essays and it just happened that she needed to write a Position Paper to officially join the club. The Position Paper example of another student was printed and given to every person that wanted to join, it scared her with its long length and complexity.
She knew that she could do it if she put her mind to it but still couldn’t help making excuses in her head.
Right now I may have time to do this, but I also don’t want to slack off on my classes. What if next year, I’ll be busy for real and have more of the high-school-like-amount of homework? Where’s the time for me to write this!?
Idiot. You’re perfectly clear that you have so much time on your hand right now that it is spilling. You can just cut off some of your entertainment time to write the paper, you know?
But...I’m going to write novels again. I was invited and introduced to a good website that is created by the community of authors. Writing takes time, ideas can come suddenly. I can’t write novels with a packed schedule; I need my schedule to be open.
...Your schedule is too open that I find you lazing around more than writing. Stop with the excuses.
But—
There is no reason for you to refuse writing the paper. You’re just scared that if you were to write the paper, you’ll lose time for entertainments.
No, that’s not it—
Then what is it that keeping you from writing it?
…
Nothing, huh?
For the next few days, Midori went to the class to question Mr. Aper twice but still didn’t decided to join. To be more clear, she was uncertain if she was considered a member or not because of the way she was treated.
She was given access to the class forum and online classroom website even though nothing of being a member of the club was mention.

Next week would be the start of the second semester.
Staring at number two, Midori pursed her lips slightly. She had already skipped this question and finished answering the other questions on this Trigonometry Test.
Her left hand had a small paper cut because her hands were soft and kind of dry. Flipping through the package hastily resulted in such unnecessary pain. Luckily it was not right on the tip of her finger; if the tip of her finger was cut, she wouldn’t be able to play her violin for a while.
I know how to solve for the angles, but I need the length of the bottom line to do so...I forgot how to find this. Hmm...what if I do this…
Scribbling on the blank space next to the picture, she found that her answer for the bottom line did not fit the drawing and it had a bunch of patternless decimals.
She glanced at the clock above the door.
13 minutes till class ends.
Hmm…this…
Her head vaguely lifted and her half-lidded eyes opened wide as she gasped.
I need to make a 90-degree angle.
She wrote out a few equations and scrutinized it.
Hmm...No...This is not right...But I think I kind of know how to figure this out.
Midori looked up at the clock again and returned her gaze to the test.
5 minutes...Oh! I do need to make a 90-degree angle, but not by rotating. I am supposed to split the isosceles triangle into two, make the bottom line and the split a 90-degree angle. Ah...I can solve it now.
Furiously, she scribbled down her works and wrote the answer onto the answer line. The bell rang.
Phew. Just in time. That question shouldn’t have taken that long. The blame shouldn’t be on my forgetness alone, the drawing didn’t look like an isosceles triangle at all~! The two sides were so uneven but turned out to have the same length…
Midori sighed and talked to Vanessia, a girl she walked with to her next class before saying ‘bye.’
