In two distant battlefields, each a shady figure could be seen talking to themselves. However, though their mouths were moving, no sound could be heard. The man and the woman wanted to keep whatever they said between them secret.
“Hello Miriael, my dear, it has truly been far too long since I last heard your sweet voice. How has it been, my love?”
“Oh, Kethryl, you wouldn’t believe how much I have suffered the past few months, unable to be by your side. And the food, no, the sustenance these apes provide, is just revolting. Sigh, but enough of my plight, how has your trip been so far?”
“Not much better, I’m afraid. Almost all these savages are the same, no matter what side of the continent they are from.
“Mhh, almost? Really, now don’t just keep me on the hook, tell me more.”
“Ahh, Miriael, how perceptive of you, you truly know me the best. And you are correct, there are at least a few of these apes who are worth watching.”
“Do I have to pull out every little thing out of your nose, honey?”
“Sorry, dear, it’s just we haven’t been getting many opportunities to talk to each other recently. I just wanted to savor the moment a bit longer. But you are right, sadly, I can’t listen to your cute voice forever. What a shame.”
“Ehem!?”
“Oh, right, excuse me, I got distracted. As I said, there are at least a few apes worth watching, such as Gram Tucker. Truly an interesting child, so full of hate and despair. Such a wonderful and rare find.”
“For you to speak so highly of him… I guess he left quite the impression?”
“Honestly, quite the impression is not doing him justice. The boy raised over a hundred thousand undead in just three years of work. They aren’t really impressive fighters, but watching a hundred thousand undead march against a small city fully encircled by a writhing mass of dead bodies made my heart skip a beat. Ahhhh, the wonderful destruction they are about to unleash upon the man, woman, and children, uhh, I can almost see it right now in my very eyes.”
“Sigh, you got all the fun, my love. It is so boring here. Just like last year, all I have been able to witness is wave after wave of Ibasan Soldiers throwing their minuscule little lives away. And their commanders constantly try to make me dig another tunnel. But I’m not gonna dig another one after what happened to the last one.”
“What happened?”
“They detected the tunnel in advance and collapsed it. Thankfully, it was during my break, or my clothes would have become dirty. I’m definitely not gonna dig another one. I have no desire to eat a mouthful of dirt. However, that isn’t even the worst of it. One of their mages has been able to form a core.”
“What!?”
“No need to yell, though I do understand your surprise. The Bitch was able to completely block the hole we made in their wall.”
“So there are more…”
“More? What are you talking about?”
“You remember Annas’ son Joel.”
“You mean Anna’s fat bastard, what about him? You don’t mean he…”
“Yes, he awakened his bloodline. He must have had a huge change in his life, or else that guy would have never figured it out.”
“I feel like we have missed something important. Or something happened beyond our knowledge. But enough guessing, back to the actual reason for this call. The siege is running well, all things considered. We have inflicted some casualties and scared them quite a bit. How is it on your end?”
“Sigh, despite Joel almost taking a piece out of me with one of his arrows when he mistook me for Gram. Everything is going well. The wall has been overrun, and the defenders are only holding on with makeshift barricades. They have completely run out of arrows and oil. They should lose any day now. Now all I have to do is wait for Him to show up.”
“Don’t be too greedy, hubby. Remember our original mission, we are only here to weaken them and to secure key hostages. Don’t risk your life.”
“Don’t worry, I will be far away from him when it happens. Bye Bye Honey, I love you.”
“Goodbye, I love you too. And be careful you hear me.”
